power steering

My '79 ZX has power steering w/ an '89 350 engine. I'm leaning toward removing it, though, since I'd like to free up some room in the engine compartment plus I don't think I'll need it. However, removing it isn't a project I'm going to do in the next month or two.

well i know in my 87Z with the car off, turning the wheel is quite difficult, but im sure its different when the car is designed for no PS...im just wondering if you really have to work the wheel....

The weight of a V8 should add maybe 100 lbs or so to the front of the car, which will not affect the difficulty in turning that much. What DOES affect it is tire width. Every car I have owned with wider tires and no PS has been increasingly difficult to turn the wheel while going slow or stopped. Or you could just do several months of intense steroid cycles and lots of weights to increase muscle mass on your arms smile.gif

best way to find out is to go drive one and see what you think, my rack'n'pinion (no ps)'80 280ZX was heavier steering with my 'cheap' (lots of iron+ massive battery up front) V8 conversion, a few changes later and 50/50 weight on my street v8zx and the steering IMO is same or more likely lighter with 245's all around than in stock form. Its certainly no big effort to drive/turn and I do lots of slow speed/parking etc.

I had a '79ZX with worm&ball power steering, I wanted power rack&pinion, so took the front crossmember, rack, lines suspension and all from an '82 turbo parts car I had and put it under the front of the '79. Also transferred the pump. It was fairly simple and worked great! The old system of tierod ends, idler arm, pitman, draglink etc, would have been too expensive to replace.
