Guest norm[T12SDSUD]
I just swapped my old 3.9 rear end out a couple weeks ago for my hardly used 3.7 rear end. Anway I go to the track tonight and the 2nd run I broke something in the rear end spider gears. When I made the turn up the return Road it made an awful banging grinding noise. I jacked one side up and the wheel would barely turn. I decided to drive it up the road and see if I could make the 60 mile journey home. Thankfully I was able to make it home thanks to the fact that it was all interstate and I didn't have to make turns or drive on curves. Anyway, pretty freaking IRONIC that I changed rear ends because I thought 9 years of track abuse on the 3.9 would cause it to eventually break and now my replacemnet breaks after just a couple damn runs. To make matters worse my damn car is still missing in 3rd gear above 6000 rpm. I think I'll take the fuel pickup out and see if it's crudded up and causing the fuel supply to be reduced. Anyway all in all it was a suck azz night! Later,Norm
Guest 280ZForce
i think maybe the saying "dont fix it unless it's broke" has some play in this 1. j/k...well @least u still have the 3.9 to throw back on it.
Guest BiltWel
The fact that you got to run should be enough they all break thats why we are here right? What did you run by the way?
DavyZ
Norm, since we're dealing with older used parts (it was used wasn't it?) the rear diff gears are certainly parts whose longevity could be questionable. You are not the only one who has had that problem BTW. Hope you can get another! Davy
Guest 73TPIZ
Hey Norm, Where'd you run tonight? Did "The Rock" have T&T tonight? BTW, Darlington is opening back up soon, hopefully by next week. The new owners think they fixed the drainage problem on the track (or rather, the lack of drainage problem). Time and a couple of monsoons will tell. May have to pull the tarp off the Z in the next few weeks. Later, Good luck on the "un-swap/re-swap".
Guest norm[T12SDSUD]
Went to Farmington tonight. The car ran like *** since it was missing in 3rd gear. Had two runs best was only 8.6 @ 81.8 mph which is TOTAL CRAPOLA!!! Before I rebuilt the motor this past winter, I was running high 8.2's low 8.3's @ 84-85 mph on street tires at Farmington. I did some more porting around the valve guides in the winter and added a crankshaft scraper but I don't think that stuff helped one damn bit.In fact I may have lost some HP. The miss is driving me nuts. It only does it at the track. On interstate entrance ramps it's fine. I've looked at all the obvious causes and haven't found anything so I'm stumped. Like I said I'm gonna check the fuel pickup and see maybe if it's gummed up with tank crud and reducing fuel flow. Yeah rear ends are easy to come by it's just funny how it happened. Like 280Z Force said, if it ain't broke don't fix it! LOL
280zwitha383
Interesting, I've been thinking about swapping a 3.54 with 280zxt CV's in place of my 3.90 with half shafts, and then putting some bigger tires on it. Maybe I won't.
