AK-Z
As some of you know I have a KA and am going to put it into my Z. People with SRs might be able to answer this question. The KA has 3 belts; one to run the alternator, the other to run the AC and the last one runs the water pump and PS pump. AC is easily removed. The PS pump is the problems because the same belt runs the water pump as well. I thought of running a shorter belt, but the PS pump is the tensioner for that belt. There are only 2 things I need to run on the belt, the alternator and the water pump. How did you guys address this problem?
SR240Z
running the shorter belt i dont think you need the tensioner anymore since its just a triangle shape now instead of oblong
Guest shaggy240sx
I am pretty sure this would not apply to SR people (I hope). I only have the Alternator belt on my SR and I am pretty sure I still have a functional water pump. Now you have me worried...I am going to have to take a look at it when I get home now. Hugh
The SR uses the same belt to drive the alternator and water pump. On the KA... hmm... never done that before. I would think the tensioner would be nice to have, though. Especially on the water pump, as its a pretty important belt.
AK-Z
I don't think you understand how the belts are placed. I should of clarified. crank has 3 grooves for 3 belts. 1.crank to alternator, alternator is adjustable to be the tensioner. 2.crank to AC pump, AC bracket has an idler as the tensioner. 3.crank to water pump to PS pump, the PS pump is the tensioner the water pump is located right above the balancer/crank. Running the belt from the water pump and alternator on the same belt isn't going to work because the belts that they use line up on different grooves on the balancer. Hugh
Me? I was talking about the SR. (replying to the comment above) I totally understand your question, and I'm trying to get an answer for you.
Guest shaggy240sx
AK-Z...Sorry, my post turned into a thread jack of sorts. On the SR the same belt runs the Water Pump and Alternator...from what you are saying that is not the case on the KA. Sorry for the thread jack. It wasnt on purpose. Hugh
I posted your question on FA, and got a response here: http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB9&Number=68101287&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=
Hugh
Refer to the link to FA above, there's some pics posted of one solution.
Guest 81na ZX
Convert the PS into a dummy/tensioner pully? (remove guts or mount just a pully) But I like that Alt relocation idea!
Hugh
Me too. Relocating the alternator looks like the best, but more difficult option.
Mack
Just run a hose loop from the PS out to the PS in and keep a little fluid in it for lubrication purposes. Although, when I put a KA24DE in an 89 coupe and didnt have the PS lines, I just drained the pump and left the hoses disconnected. I put probably close to 5000 miles on that and the pump never locked up or made ANY funny noises.
