About the rocker panel/low door beam idea, it should help in the case of a frontal impact.

The thing that impressed me about that Mercades SUV crash test commercial (where they brag about having one of the safest cars ever) was that the passenger compartment was completely unharmed with no buckling of the sheet metal at all.

Most cars I've seen (on tv at least) buckle a bit at the rocker panels with a head on collision, increasing your chances of a broken leg.
