BRAKES and ROLL CAGE DONE...finally....???

Hey Everyone,

I FINALLY got the 4 wheel Outlaw disk brake conversion done and a custom built roll cage installed.

What an experience that was!!!

I've had the brakes supplied by Mike (SCCA) for over a year and finally had a friend of mine install it. The fronts bolted right on, but my rims wouldn't fit at all. Maybe 3 piece BBS rims have an odd offset or something, but it gave him hell. I thought he was joking and went down to the shop and tried the installation myself. I was somewhat successful with re-installing the fronts. However, there were still quite a few problems. After figuring out that I needed a more negative offset for the front and rear calipers, I decided to space my rims out slightly and offset the caliper about a 1/2" inward. While doing this I decided to go all out and have billet machined brackets made for the calipers. These brackets are a true work of art and I had them patterned by my machinist as well. So if you guys need a really nice brackets for your car, let me know and I'll get you a price. The coolest thing about the whole project is that I have an emergency brake using the stock cables and Wildwood spot calipers.

My 6 pt. roll cage is not only functional but it's SCCA legal as well. I can still recline my seats.

I took pictures this morning and will have photos by the middle of next week.

Now that I'm done rambling, I need some info.

I didn't get a chance to install a proportioning valve? Do I/ will I need to?

Wow! Sounds like a great setup to me! smile.gif

I'm not sure about the proportioning valve but my intuition says that whenever doing big upgrades to the front or rear or both sets of brakes, you'll probably benefit from a proportioning valve to keep your braking ratios correct.

Ooh Ooh! I'm doing the Outlaw stuff too - did you go 5lug? How did you do the rear Spts? Mike's working on a bracket for me using a solid rear rotor - he said the WilWood Spots have a completely different offset - bleah! Hope to have mine done pretty soon too. I'm not quite to the point of putting the fronts on yet, seems I need some bearings but I'd love to see pics of your setup! Brakes and plumbing everything is all that's holding me up right now - I'm excited!

I'll have pics. by Wednesday, if I'm Lucky Monday night. I stayed with the 4 lug for only one reason; the cost of buying new rims/buying new tires. I run 15x11 fronts and 15x13 rears with 285/345. Maybe if I hit the lotto one day....yeahhhh right......hmmmmm....maybe after I PAY taxes.....yeahhh right....

Wildwood doesn't make a spot caliper specifically for Datsun Z application. They also won't sell you the bracket alone, you have to buy the spot calipers just to get a freak'in bracket......WHAT A SCAM!!!!! But Wildwood is more than willing to sell you just the Spot Calipers....Now I've got two sets of spot calipers. I basically took the spot caliper they supplied me with and machined it to work on a Datsun. It was pretty simple. A little cutting, grinding, welding and it was done. I also used longer lug studs on all four sides.

I'm using 12.25" rotors all the way around and Outlaw 4000 calipers x4.

Hoover,

Dont apologize about "Rambling" we all do it/I'm the worst. Besides, you just completed two very labor intensive mod's on your car!

Remember; this is the forum to Meekly present forth your good deeds/works for Viewing by the rest of the Humble/Meek crowd.

We dont brag on our cars/we let our cars do the bragging for us!

Congrats on the progress!

Kevin,

(Yea,Still a "Cant Brag Yet" Inliner)

I meant-

I used the spot caliper "brackets" Wildwood sold me and machined them to work on a Z car.

The Ebrake cables are mounted on a custom bracket.
