Suspension info

Hello everyone,

I just checked out a site from performance wheels for spacers, now I have another question, Actually 2.

1) Where can I get fender flares, so that I can make my zx have the wider stance of putting 17/8's on it? Someone said MSA, but I don't have their website/phone number. I have a motorsport catalog, but wanted to compare some other prices.

2) Where can I get the coil over's? Also, what exactly are the coil over's? Are they basically like springs with an adjustment so that you can tighten them and make your car a little higher, ride rougher, or loosen them and make the ride softer, but you sit lower?

3) (ok, guess I really have three quetions) Is it necessary to relocate anything else when putting the bigger wheels on? I have heard some people relocate there pearches, or even where the shock is bolted up top to give less/more toe in/out (I think that is right)

Thanks for any and all info. I'm just doing some research for when I get my car on the road in a month or two, what I'm going to do next. I think it's off to get some bigger wheels and rims, since the 400hp, i'll be pushing will need some bigger rubber then 225/50/15's i'm running now. Thanks again icon_biggrin.gif

Don't know about flare vendoes, but MSA's # is 800-633-6331

You can get CO's from several vendors including Ground Control and Carrera. What are they? They are smaller diameter springs (usually 2.5") that have an adjustable threaded collar to raise or lower the car. In addition to adjusting ride height, you can balance the cross weights (LF-RR, RF-LR) so that your weight transfer and suspension loading doesn't change radically between L and R corners. You can go up and down, any number of the 4 struts, but changing stiffness requires changing springs. Some fine tuning can be done with adjustable shocks, but springs and corner weights get you in the ballpark.

Changing wheels and tires doesn't alter the basic geometry, though the car may react differently due to ride height, wheel offset, tire width and compound, sidewall stiffness, etc. For the street, mostly bolt-on parts oughta do fine, unless you want to spend gobs of dough on stuff that looks cool and "racer-like". With 400 HP, I'd look at the brake options, then go for cornering - you're gonna want to be able to stop that beast! Sway bars are a quick and cheap way to add cornering, BTW. JC Whitney carries Addco stuff - good price and quality, not top-of-the-line, but certainly adequate. Poly bushings help too. "Sport springs" from H&R, Eibach, Suspension Techniques, etc. can firm you up without loosing fillings or resorting to coilovers, and usually lower the car a modest amount.

Hope this helps.

AFAIK 17x8 will fit a ZX without coilovers.

a Z needs them for that size but i dont think a ZX does...

ask ross he's the ZX dude...

I already have lowered my car using tockito springs and shocks. I wanna get coil overs, so that I can raise it up just a bit, plus I thought you had to have them to run 17/8's. Not sure though. Well, thanks for the info though. Anyone else out there have any advice?

Howdy Sean, I'm just back home now......

I'm not up on your ride but 400hp in a ZX is fun icon_smile.gif You talking rw or flywheel? I'm happy with rw icon_smile.gif

wheels/springs/brakes.......ahh fun and $

I had 16x7's on my stock susp (well geometry wise) with no problems. I did coilovers at same time as my 5 lug and 16x8 etc install so can't comment on that fit with stock susp. I now have 16x8's and they clear my rears easily with lots of room inside, I could see possibly 315's out their some day.

Fronts clear my lower coilover perch by ~1/8" with the perch ground to ~1/8" thickness/width (minimum for threaded collar to sit on), then spring and it's perch HAS to be above the tire to clear. I had to go to 7" springs to fit this (with stock top hat/my adjustable camber plates (ie. shallower) might allow me to get back to 8" springs). I'll check later for how much room I have outside my front treads to move them out but I only have room for 1/4" more spacer max on my ARP 2.5" studs (3" but only 2.5 is threaded AIR). This with 245/45's all around.

If you're thinking of going 5lug and big brakes I've got 13's on mine and one of my setups is out east and the owner is sitting on it as he ended up selling his car before installing. Contact me for info if interested.

13" brembo's

PBR calipers/custom brackets

SS lines/pads hardware etc
