Guest Thurem
Just read BLKMG's describtion of his new wheels, very cool. So I went and checked out discounttire's website, they now allow you to browse wheels by size. This is very cool cause you can now tell which models of wheels are available in in the offset you need. BLKMGK
Heh, DUH! I never noticed that... DO be aware that while brosing their site using some of their searches that some wheels did *NOT* show up that DID come up when I browsed by manufacturer. In some cases polished or chrome versions came up but NOT the painted ones - weird! FWIW - th elug nuts they sent were good quality, they sent McGuard locks, and the packaging was very good. It took awhile and they did NOT provide a UPS tracking number but I'd most certainly buy from them again if TireRack didn't have what I want. TireRack was able to ship, to my door, two tires (only) for the woman's car in LESS than 24 hours. Talk about shock! Mucho' impressive but they've NOT got the wheels I wanted, nor the tires, and they won't let you look by size that I could tell - they don't give out offsets either. Bleah! Guest Anonymous
I hate that software many of the tire and autopart stores are using online. Put your year, make, model sorry we have nothing for you. Annoyed me at Tirerack as well, oh I know I can call them, but given a chance I usually know what I want to buy, just let me access it and be on my way. Maybe a 'Do you know what your doing' (Y/N): prompt. And hey microsoft how about a expert mode, where I don't have to have your software ask me constant if I'm sure of this, or sure of that. (I know in delete situations its nice, but it annoys the crap out of me that they default everything so it pops up and wants to be your buddy (like the dumb ass paper clip and dog cartoons in Office) and hold your hand through the entire operation.. Grrr... ) and while your at it, quit eating up all my drive space and ram with the silly little animations when the computers doing something (crumpling paper etc...) just give it to me straight "Dude, this is gonna take like forever, go get a snack..." BLKMGK
ROTFL! I lov eit when I hit the GM dealer and they ask me "what year?". I roll my eyes and say something like "let's call it a 94 Firebird this time". When they give me a look I ask them if they have listings for a '72 Datsun Z with a 383 stroker and a 6speed. That's good for a giggle! When I tried to get valve cover gaskets Manny, Moe, and Smoking Crack couldn't look up a FelPro part number! They had to have a year, make, model. I told them it was a SBC V8 and the kid had to ask their "engine expert". The same "expert" that was going on and on with another employee about cam degreeing and how it was used to get max compression (ahem). Yup, he brought me CORK gaskets when I told him I wanted the reusable ones. He finally brought me a rubber FelPro set but I suspect they're NOT exactly what I wanted - I'll live. Gone are the days when the guy behind the counter knew much about turning wrenches. Thankfully for my alternator bracket a friend knew a good counterguy and sort of what I needed. I understand it's a $15 aluminum bracket from a mid-80's 'Vette. If it works well with my SWP I'll let everyone know about it so they don't suffer as I have.. Fun 'n Games! Drax240z
Since we're on the topic, (nice post BTW lone, I totally agree) isn't it sad when you go to a car dealer to check out certain cars, and you know way more about them than the sales people do? Subaru, BMW, and Lexus have all flat out lied to me over here, I've pointed out quite civilly that they were incorrect with their statements, but they haven't been too happy. The Subaru salesman claimed that the Impreza won the last 5 straight WRC championships. Anyway, just another pet peeve. Audi seemed quite up front and honest about their cars here. Their salesmen seemed to know a little about the cars that they were selling.
Evan Purple240zt
Interesting point about buying auto parts. I work for carquest, we have knowledgeablt people and not a bunch of chodes who dont give a rat fart whether you get the right parts or not. Trak-auto etc.. are useless. Carquest has accounts with real mechanics and does 99% of business through delivery. I do deliver to mechanics, awesome for when i am stumped. I can usually ask about 15 different shops per day. Car salesmen? I went in to buy a maxima for my mom.. I knew WAY more than the salesman. But i look at this way, if they know more than me i havent done all my homework. Same applies for stereo equipment, people tend to think im a mr-knowitall dickhead in stores like that. I say call it whatcha want, just dont try pulling any wool over these eyes!! Evan PS.. carquest rules! Carquest brands are made by raysbestos, pennzoil, moog etc... not no name crap, just relabled Good quality parts. Guest Anonymous
To be fair to the poor sharks that have to sit waiting for a victim to come in off the street.. Many of these guys make the rounds between dealers and really don't know much about the particular brand de jour they are working at. My wife and I knew a salesman at a local Chevy dealer years ago (I won't say who, but he'd eat a bug to sell you a car), and the way sales worked there was, top salesman gets a demo car to use and bonuses, bottom 2 or 3 salesmen get the door hitting them in the butt at the end of the month. Its a ruthless business and not a fun job for sure. I'm sure most here know it, but they're main job is to get you into talk to the 'closer' who squeezes you for all he can, this is the guy to hate in my humble opinion as he's usually cuthroat, rude and ruthless. Its a interesting game though, notice they'll steer away from interest rates and such and just hit you with "So how much do you want your payments to be?", the loan is then worked out to get that payment even if its 84 months at 15% interest! Make them work to get the interest rate you want, they'll shop around if you don't just fold. There are so many tricks involved, but once your hip to the game it can be fun (although I let the wife do the deal, she's ruthless and I just get pissed and want to punch someone... ). One thing you can do is be vague about which car you want if you want to look around a bit, once they get you hammered down to a model its show you the inventory and get you to the closer with your selection before your feet hit the ground.. Another tip, if you want to look at cars (on the lot) unmolested, go REALLY early and walk the lot. My wife and I would go at like 7 in the morning and walked uninterrupted looking for potential models and makes. Buying a new car is the second most exciting thing there is that sucks... BLKMGK
I used to hit the lot's LATE at night to check out cars. Nowadays they think you're there to steal them (sigh). for my first and probably ONLY new car I went through a buyer's service. I knew EXACTLY what options I wanted and exactly what it would cost before walking in the door. I paid cash too which really shocked them! They actually had th eballs to ask me where I got th emoney and to warn me it would be frozen in my account as soon as I handed over the check. It wasn't, I checked I too knew a salesguy once. It really is cutthroat and if he wasn't making quota he really sweated. I'd hate to be in that business at all, even the mechanics around here are getting hosed working for the dealers. I'll stick to used thanks but that WRX STI coming out sure is tempting!
DavyZ
To be fair, it all depends on the store. I worked at places that never had a "quota" per se, but you had to sell some cars or the mortgage won't get paid. It's that simple. I was not a grinder, neither was the floor manager ("closer"), but I know those shops exist and I detest them... My stores had bonuses based on quantity, so it really helped out a lot if you sold a car and there was hardly any money in the deal. Working 6 days a week is not fun and definitely not conducive to family life. Don't want to go back... David
Guest Anonymous
I knew you worked that business before Davy, I hope I didn't offend, but I know (and you do to I'm sure) those type of dealers are out there. To be fair I've been to some great dealers in my area. When I bought the BMW it was a whole different style (perhaps for the yuppie crowd I donno) of sales. It was low key, one guy did the whole deal with the exception of the finance officer who just basically did the loan paperwork. They're service was also considerably better. You were asked what was a 'convenient time' to bring the car in, not like at Ford (Downtown Ford in Sacto, just say no!) where you'd drive it in and sit in a LONG line (out to the street) for repairs at 07:00 in the morning. Bottom line, dealers can vary quite a bit, if you receive to much pressure, walk. There are others who will sell you the same thing and treat you better. Kevin Shasteen
Alright, who started this; you guys are getting me going again-talking about dealers. The 12 years I was w/MIC I did nothing but deal w/dealers. All the way from the the janitor to the owner & everytone in between. I've seen their paperwork on the deals they made which went sour for whatever reason & I've seen their scheme's for salaries on their salesmen-it aint a job for everyone. The dealer as a whole is only going to be as good as its owner; if the owner sets the ground rules & is firm in enforcing those rules then the dealer as a whole will be a good one. However, what I noticed when dealing w/claims against dealers is that the salespeople will circulate dealers; in other words they'll work for a dealer for a few months-if nothing big happens then they'll quit & move on down the road to the next dealer only to return back to the first dealer in a few months or they move on down to the next dealer. Very few salespeople stay w/one dealer for extended periods of time. If they have been there for awhile its usually because the dealer is a good one or the owner doesnt trust anyone else other than that person. Its definately a strange game the dealers play & a very shrewd one at that. Kevin, (Yea,Still an Inliner)
