My new T04 turbo

Hello,

I just got a good deal on a used but rebuild Garrett T04 (i think B) turbo from a guy who used it on a Toyota AE86. The house says t04 ar 60 and it is 5.91 inch (15 cm) diameter, the exhaust house hase a .36 AR for spooling on a 1600 CC engine.

The compressorwheel top size is 2.17 inch (5.5 cm) and bottom size 2.76 inch (7.0 cm), when i calculate the trim i get 61.73 trim.

The exhaustwheel top size is 1.81 inch (4.6 cm) and bottom size 2.52 inch (6.4 cm).

My question to the people who run t3/t4, what kind of turbo is this and what kind of power does this turbo make. I did used the search function and i think it's maybe a t04b v1 or v2?

My ohter question, is the exhaustwheel the same like the stock t3 size and would it fit inside the .82 ar (european size) house?

I have some pictures i will post below

thanks Rick

Hi Rick,

By your measurements, that is a V trim compressor wheel, which implies that the housing is a T04B. Note that almost all T04B's have 8 bladed compressor wheels.

Based on the compressor map for the V trim, you can easily flow enough air to make 350 hp, but the turbine housing and wheel are too small for your goals. From your measurements, the exhaust inducer is the same as a stage 2 and stage 3 wheel, but the 1.8 inch exhaust exducer(really the limiting flow factor for the wheel) is a stage 1 or stock sized. The ar is also too small. Most here would probably reccomend at least a full stage 3 wheel with a .63 AR. Since the tubine exducer measures about the same as stock, I think there's a chance the wheel could fit in you housing. If not, using your current wheel should not make much difference.

I believe SleeperZ uses or once used this compressor with the stock turbine section for just over 300 hp. You may need to port your Nissan turbine wastegate hole to reduce the chance of surge. You will also have to make fuel delivery and ecu modifications to reach your goals. You should search this forum to confirm anything I've said. The answers are here if you search for them.

Hi GrommitZ,

Yes after searching for SleeperZ i have found the tread about the t04b and read it, thanks for the tip :) , like you sayed the exhaust house is to small and i'm not gonna use it. With the stage 3 wheel you pointing at the exhaust side? with a .63 ar, the stock exhaust side is .82 ar.

When i search on the net about the compressor wheel spec, i found it is good for 450 to 480 crank hp so i was thinking it's a good turbo. is there no way to just bolt the turbo inside the stock exhaust house?

Thanks for your reaction

Hi Rick,

The .82 AR you have in your part of the world may not spool up the turbo as quick as the US spec .63, but with such a large compressor wheel for the stock turbine, the .82 AR should help increase the needed exhaust flow.

If the exhaust wheel fits in the stock housing, it should be an easy bolt on. If it doesn't, I believe you will only have to replace the turbine wheel with your stock one.

Thanks, i was hoping it wil work. I have with the stock turbo on the engine with the .82 ar house in 4th gear 10 psi @ 2700rpm so it spools good, it wil give 7 psi @ 2500rpm ( i have a 3''dp and its helps).

I have a look at the exhaustwheel and hope it fits.
