Guest soon2be
Hi I'm new to the site and pretty much Z culture in general, i've been lurking and reading for about a week straight now, and i have some questions about the RB26 swap i either failed to find via manual search and or "search funtion" maybe i'm just phrasing it wrong please bear with me. what kind of bracing would need to be done on say a 240. i've heard that they aren't what you'd call the stiffist thing on the planet and i'm sure droppin a motor with almost 3X the power output of the "intended" motor i'm sure chassis flex and such could become quite and issue.. also can a stock 240 rear end take that kind of power? or is a swap recommended? like i said if i just failed to find this info i'm sorry. i guess i need time for the no0b ness in my brain to wear itself out haha
Z U L8R
sounds like you're on the right track. the r180 is a pretty weak differential and it would be a great idea to put a r200 in it so you don't have rear end problems, you also need a rear mustache bar off like a 78 280z if you get an r200 cause the holes are bigger and if you drill em out bigger you're gonna make that mustache bar very weak, check out the mustache bar on www.arizonazcar.com it's so sexy!! before i'd worry about chassi flex i'd be worried about how i'm gonna stop this car with single piston front calipers and small rear drum brakes LOL lemme know when you get started on yours cause i'm gonna do the same. i have a 78 280z with rb20det, and i have a widebody 71 240 that's got no rust, roll cage , and beefier frame rails. as soon as my friend's done with the body work i was gonna put my rb25det in it but i cracked a ring land in cylinder #6 on my rb20, so i'm gonna put my 25 in my 280 and use the rb20's transmission. that'll leave me with an extra rb25 tranny and no motor for my sexy 240z platform. so i'm gonna get an rb26 for that one. so when you start on your project lemme know cause i'll either be doing it right there with you or already be done with it and i don't mind helping if you run into some issues. good luck David
Guest NISSAN4EVER
Front and rear upper strut bars are a good idea, stronger lowers as well. Some people do a 3 way upper strut bar in the front going across and also to the fire wall. Some people also put braces across the 2 frame rails in the engine bay if your not running the stock fan then right in front of the motor. A roll cage also stiffins things up, I believe cusco makes one esp for the 240 but with a welder tubing and time you could do it yourself. You really dont have to worry TOO much about a stock rb26 but anything over that and you should go the whole 9 yards. Brake up grade is a good idea too as stated by Z U. 79-85 4x4 calipers actualy bolt right on the front with no mods except the dust shield with stock non vented rotors and adapter plates with 280zx rear calipers and rotors bolt right up as well. Hope that helps you a bit.
