stealthimageZ
Hi, I'm about to pick up a 75 280z from a family friend and wanted some advise from experienced/knowledgable Z people. The car hasn't been driven or started up since about 93. It's just been sittin on their driveway at their old house so it has rust on the body and all that great stuff... What I want to know is if there's any tips on getting the engine to start again. It doesn't have a battery so I'll be gettin a new one, but the last time they started it they said it ran just fine, so I was thinking replace all fluids and hand pump as much old gas out as I can. Then drop some oil down the spark plug holes to lube up the cylinders, remove the valve cover to make sure everything in the head is fine and replace plugs/wires/dirstributor cap. Is there anything else that I should do or any advice on what I will be dealing with?
savageskaterkid
You don't need to hand pump the bad gas, Nissan did it right, and put a gas drain plug on the gas tank underneath. If its been sitting that long, your probably gonna need new fuel injectors
280z1975
Not even close to a comprehensive list of what needs to happen ... but to start with: 1) Drain Gas, oil, trans fluid, radiator fluid, brake fluid ... flush each system, you gas tank will have rust in it, I can guarantee you this. It will need to be boiled and treated 2) tow, drag, get the car to a mechanic (or do these if you already have the knowledge and time). The injectors are going to have problems. They need to be cleaned and repaired or replaced. The engine block might have rust in there, so this needs to be dealt with. 3) There are lots of Vaccum hoses you will need to have replaced if they are bad, these can affect the drivablity of your car. Also some of the fuel hoses and others might need to be replaced. 4) There is a good chance the rear brake master cyclinders are full or rust and need to be replaced. Basically if it's a liquid, it needs to be replaced and it's transport system needs to be checked and replaced/repaired. Once all this happens i suggest you drive the car for at least 3 months and have a pen and paper and write down all those little things you notice the car will need one. Enjoy the car, get a feel for it, then go after any restoration/ mods you want to do to the car. Use the search feature on the site to get help with any of the projects. Hope this helps. Also check out my 75' and it's refreshing it went throught: http://www.gregggermer.com/280z.htm
katman
There's also a good chance the clutch disc is fused to the flywheel, so when you crank it over the first time make sure its out of gear, not just clutch in. First start up on an engine that's been sitting I usually pour some oil over the cam, take all the plugs out, spray some WD-40 in each cylinder, unplug the coil, and turn the engine over with the starter for about 20 seconds to get some oil in the bearings. And yeah, you're looking at some nasty gas tank issues.
stealthimageZ
well I just talked to the owner and they said the last time It's been started up was 7 years ago, but doubt that will make much of a difference with these symptoms....tryin 2 decide wheter I have the time to take this car on or pass it up....If I don't get it from them then it's just going to the junk yard n it's so hard for me to see this car just go 2 waste like that....
