Guest zcars74
I have a friend that wants to put rear disk brakes on his 260. Here's the thing he wants to put the entire rear end off a 280zx in it. Strut housing suspension differential cv joints. Basically he wants to unbolt the entire rearend and put it on his 260. Is this possible? How much more then bolt on is this? Modern Motorsports Ltd
"How much more then bolt on is this?" Major NON bolt on and a PITA for an inferior handling suspension. Otherwise I Mike and I wouldn't have seen thru the rear disk setup we sell which makes an easy install of parts superior to the 280ZX setup available. And for the CV shafts I wouldn't have seen thru the CNC run of CV adaptors etc.......far easier IMO to do each package (brakes and CV's) as their own installs on your Z rear setup. The brake and handling results will be better than 280ZX (Z owners with the my Z rear disk setups now have BETTER rear brakes than my present 280ZX rears.....I have to do something about that 280ZX has a semi-trailing arm rear that isn't very easy to alter so becomes a PITA for handling improvements. Anyhow, the CV shafts are certainly a nice item to have. And the calipers may be good core trades for him or a 280ZX owner as they're pricey cores. And extra R200's on the shelf never hurt. Guest Anonymous
Sorry to say they will not bolt on, and yes this is a very bad idea. The ZX susp. is terrible (having owned a 79') I dropped a few hundred $$ to beef-up the susp. It haled, but it is nothing like my coilovers on my 77' 280Z. I'm running ZX rear brakes on my 77' and they work great. I picked up a Maxima bracket and they bolted right on. The only thing I have left to work on is the e-brake. I love'm. I suggest you buy or find the mounting brackets and keep the 260z susp., but thats just me. (Plus it would cost you less in the long run). Dan Baldwin
Just another voice noting the inferiority of the ZX rear suspension. Semi-trailing arms suck. Chapman struts MUCH better. ZX rear brake swap works well in my experience. I used the Maxima brackets as well. Much more consistent than drums and less lockup-prone. Use a ZX or adjustable proportioning valve. I used a ZX one to reduce the risk of the goofball driver over-biasing the rears and flying off the course.
