Guest zphreek
hey all! i recently did the the 88 4-runner caliper/84 ZX rotor swap on my 72 Z. the problem i am encountering is i cant get my rear brakes to brake as hard as my front ones...on a dirt road i can step on them and lock up all four but on the highway only the fronts lock up. i gutted the stock prop valve but i didnt notice any difference. thanks! DavyZ
Are you converting to discs in the rear or just leaving the drums in?? If you want to get the rears to lock up similar to the fronts, you may want to install a proportioning valve--they are available from places like Summit and Jegs. Guest zphreek
but it was my understanding that a proportioning valve is supposed to be installed in the rear brake line, is this true?? as it is right now there is no proportioning valve at all, so there is essentially a straight line to each brake. the stock prop valve is still there but there are no internals so it is in effect doing nothing but holding two ends together. if i was to install a proportioning valve in the front circuit how would i do that? would i have to install it before the distrubution block?? thanks... Guest Anonymous
The proportioning valve is for the rear brakes. Speed Way Motors have the cheapest propportioning valves for under $35.00 When you strip that stock proportioning valve out the two brake cylinders combine and an equal amount of pressure should be going to the rear and front brakes ? It is my understanding that the rear brake proportining valve function is to decrease line pressure to the rear brakes and resticting their ability to lock-up before the front brakes.Sometimes the mixing of different brands of brake pads and shoes will cause a situation where the rear brakes will lock-up before the fronts. I do not have a solution why your rear brakes are not operating properly??
