Guest Anonymous
There are no cheap coilovers and about everyone is competitive. Ross C and Scca (FONEBOOTH) are members and can give you a good quality product and service with the best advice available. Ground Control has a good locking nut that the set screw does not dig into the aluminum adusting sleeve. There are a lot of coilovers for $79.95 on ebay for the ricers but who knows what the spring's free height and weight rating. Probably about 6 inches at 600 pounds causing an epidemic of deaths 30 years from now from kidney failure. I tried to get spring specifications from the vendors but "hey man what you want, all I know is you can get it so low sparks fly" When someone does not know the spring rate in pounds forget it. Quality coilovers usually have a lifetime guarantee that they will not deviate in height or weight rating within a few percentile. I have found sleeves and springs at auction but seldom find springs for my application. A ten inch free height seems adequete with anything from 150 pounds to 250+ pounds weight rating depending on street or racing. You can piece a coilover kit together but do not expect to get it much less than the fellows named above can get it for you. Sleeves for 280 Z's are not easily obtainable due to the increased diameter size of the stut tube. There are 3- 14 inch -200 pound quality coilovers on Racers Auction right now at a starting bid of $45.00 but 14 inches is not ideal for a Datsun application. 12 Inches maybe. That is my un-educated opinion
Dan Juday
Yup, what he said. Got mine from Ross C. Very, very happy. IMHO, $400 IS cheap. Ross is very helpful. Treated me like a best friend.
Guest zphreek
alright thanks guys! i really didnt expect to find anything much cheaper but it never hurts to try anywho... i was also wondering if i can use the stock hight struts??(i have brand new tokiko non adj) i am pretty sure i can as long i am not planning on dropping it more than 1-1 1/2 inches right? in which case i would have to section out the strut tube. Modern Motorsports Ltd
"i was also wondering if i can use the stock hight struts..i am not planning on dropping it more than 1-1 1/2 inches ..." Yup, you can easily drop it 2" without sectioning struts.....as well 240Z OEM strut tops can help you gain strut travel if needed (for a 1.5" drop you have no worries, just extra info) as it's over 1.5" less in overall thickness vs. a 280Z strut top (I've posted exact measurements previously). With reduced strut travel spring rates are typically bumped up in part to reduce chance for bottoming...(ie. a slammed/Xtremely dropped suspension that is still desired to be very soft takes some careful planning) You'll like the tokico's
Guest Anonymous
There is no need to section the strut tubes since the coilovers should drop the car by 2 inches alone. Nezzi 76 just did his rear struts without sectioning and reports at least a 2 inch drop by mounting the 10 inch coilovers on the removed old perch's weld bead with a steel washer as the new coilover spring perch. Keep in mind his car is a Vello Rossa convertible conversion and about 300 pounds lighter than a conventional Z. On sectioned strut tubes you can use the z's front strut cartridges in the Rear and VW or MR2 in the front. No need to waste a pair of rear Illumina's by sectioning. I sectioned mine and expect close to a 4 inch drop.My car due to such big wheel openings will not look right without a substantial drop. We both got our supplies from Ross C. I got some used Bilstein sleeves that I had bored out and used the Ground Control nuts, hats and washer perchs from Ross. My springs were Carerra off an eBay purchase at $120.00 total. When added up I came slightly under the going rate but I am a hunter. This evening I purchased a full set of chrome Carerra 12 inch coilovers for $129.00 total off eBay for my second project but I still need that good washer perch and top hat from Ross.I have two sleeves that need bored.Yes my visa card is maxed
Guest scca
if you want cheap SSS springs in a kit for a 280 will run about $325 total. and changing the tops to the 240 type will only work on the rear of the car. it wont work up front.
