Guest Joshua
Hello. I picked up a 73 240 a couple of months ago, and have been making minor repairs and modifications as my budget has allowed. One of the modifications that was done by a previous owner is an MSD ignition with a Mallory dual point distributor. I noticed this distributor doesn't have a vacuum advance, so I decided to check and adjust the timing. The static timing was set at 30 BTDC, and mechanical was another 20 or so @ 3000 rpm. In addition, the distributor was loose enough to move by hand. I'm not sure what the timing should be, but I adjusted the point gap, set initial to 18 BTDC and adjusted mechanical to 13 at 3000 rpm for a total of 31 degrees advance. My Z has an MSA stage one cam, 6 into 1 header, free flow exhaust, and no emissions gear. Is this timing advance acceptable? Can anyone recommend a better setting? Is my timing needlesly retarded? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Josh
