Loud thud when letting off or over bumps

I belive I have found the problem. The lower spring rubber is all trashed and the spring is hitting the suspention member assembly when I let off or over large bumps. Does this sound correct? Also Does anyone know the proceedure to change it out? Can I buy the part, take a clamp and "compress" the spring enough to swap it out? OR is there a better way?
