Guest Pegasus76
If you install a 350 within a 280Z and do not change the differential or rear end....Would they snap?
Guest Anonymous
No, rock solid tuff under 450HP!
silicone boy
Would everyone agree with Tomahawk on the 450 HP thing. If so, it would save me a bit of change . I'm upgrading to a 383 and that would crank out about that much (flywheel). Unfortunately, I'm at a mile high altitude, so I'm looking at at least a 20% loss . If the rear diff and axleshafts can handle that much reliably, then I don't have to worry about an upgrade (good thing too, that R230 swap didn't look too fun and those mini-me axleshafts looked ridiculous). Guest Anonymous
No grease Zerts on the u joint half shafts. Buy lifetime u joints.( Do some forum research on this)Lone has commented that your diff should be on a level or straight plane with the half shafts so they want be turning at an awkward angle to save wear and tear. You might have to raise the diff up if the car is lowered to get it level to the ujointed half shafts. Don't fix it until broken!
Guest Anonymous
If its got a R200 in it already I'd leave it. I've been searching for rear end solutions, and have come to the conclusion, that since I havn't busted anything with my motor as is (and its way mild) and it'll take more, then I'll just stay with the R200. It took me time to arrive there, but hey the guys breaking them are turning out sickly horsepower and even then its the halfshalves or U-joints that end up bitting it. Yall have a good memory. Yeah, its my belief that the squat isn't helping the halfshaft angle at all and probably helps to contribute to they're failure (well the putting 3-5 times more HP than they were designed to see helps alot too .). Raising the rear end will help with the driveline vibration for sure, I'm not sure it'll help the halfshaft u-joints as it'll make it worse when it squats with it being even higher. If someone wants to come up with a useful Z accessory, a anti-squat system would help a great deal IMHO. (and no I have absolutely no idea how that would be done) That said, yeah squat is IMHO bad for the halfshafts, but I have accepted the fact that the squat doesn't hurt ET's really because the car hasn't moved forward yet, just down and therefore hasn't tripped the timing light. I feel it could be even better if it spent less energy pushing down on the suspension and more going forward, but there are no real numbers to support that yet, so its more of a theory than anything else at this point.
