Roostmonkey
theres no float bowls,no air/idle knobs, no choke circuits, nothing that resembles a basic carb. They look more like a TB but theres also no injectors.
OlderThanMe
What is welded on the front of the timing sproket area on the valve cover? It is definitely carburated from the low pressure slip-on gas lines from the FPR. Interesting either way.
Administrators BRAAP Posted July 26, 2007 Administrators Share Posted July 26, 2007 Looks like a simple basic DIY or simple aftermarket race carb, slide valve variety, kinda like an SU but the throttle cable lifts the slide, not engine vacuum. My guess is that throttle response is either ON or OFF, similar to mechanical injection. Definitely a race engine of some sort. Welded oil filler, oversize water pump pulley, probably a small diameter crank pulley. The simple engine mounts and the BASIC nature of the carbs, makes me think it proably was for a race boat. Pete, do you have any more info or pictures of this creature? Very interesting for sure.
z-ya
I found out more information about the carbs. They are flat slide POSA carbs. This engine was used in a formula Vee racer for hill climbs and autocross. It has an adapter plate to bolt to the VW transaxle. The stub on the valve cover probably helped tie the engine to the chassis. Hear is some cool literature on the POSA carburetor: http://www.slickschoppers.com/TechArticles/Posa1 Learn some thing new each day!
