Hey guys I went sleeper while finishing school but now i am back. And with a degree. I was just wondering if anyone could give me a rough guess on what a T-5 is going to run new or used, Ive been meaning to call some of the local junk yards but have been busy looking for jobs. Any info would be helpful.

Thanks guys.

I bought my WC T-5 from A-1 Transmissions out of Denver 5yrs ago. They took a used T-5 and refurbished and beefed up certain parts for better performance. It's rated at 325ft/lbs of torque. The stock is rated at 300+ ft/lbs. My cost, not including shipping, was about $850. But this was just for the tranny. Bell housing, IROC clutch kit, slave cyl, and shifter kit added another $400. One can find, tho rare, WC T-5's at a salvage yd. I tried for two mos and was unsuccessful. So I had one rebuilt. If you're going to get one rebuilt, spend the xtra $2-$300 and change out the OD 5th gear from the stock .63 to .75. This still allows you some decent fuel economy while cruising but gives you much better OD performance-1mph/per sec better performance if your in the 400+HP range.

Good luck!!

If I'm not mistaken, A-1 Transmissions may be a national enterprise. They're both general repair and performance specialists for just about any tranny. A-1 changed out my OD .63 5th gear by having a machine build the .75 5th gear then A-1 reinstalled it. I don't know what part of the country you're from, but I bet there's someone that's a member of this forum that lives near you that might know of a good shop in your area.

It's a bit more money but... have you considered the T56? .5 final overdrive and the first gear doesn't look too evil. I snagged mine from flywheel on back including masterslave for something in the $1700 range. It's much tougher than a T5 and nowhere near as notchy as the TKO. It IS heavier though but I honestly think it's worth it since many Zs have low rears and short tires...

I live in knoxville, there are a couple of good speed shops around here, but im not familiar with transmissions. With my old chevy I used a TH400 and never had to worry with anything. I have considered a T-56 and would probably prefer one, except there seems to be a little more modifications required than I have time and money for. If i could find a T-56 at a good price I would probably go ahead and get it, but the WC T5 just seemed more reasonable given my plans for the car and the highways around here. Eventually I plan on building a Ferrari GTO replica so I can dodge The little orange cones that are our state flag.

Are there any members in the knoxville area who could recommend a transmission shop, or even help with an eventual install out there?

Thanks guys,

Thanks Fast Frog, that was the kind of information I was looking for. I will not be that high in the HP, my 327 only has about 375HP, but I was considering tinkering with the gears anyway. Did you take your tranny to a specialized shop or just a local repair shop?

Thanks for the info.
