I have THE KlUNK in my diff.I have replaced every mount and bushing and checked EVERYTHING..all is secure.

While on stands and me under car with friend going threw gears the SLAM is in the diff.So I pulled it out, have it apart, and can find nothing wrong except 0.015 clearence in side gears... Spc. says 0.0039 to 0.0079..... so 0.015 is way off.Ring and pinion backlask in perhaps only a degree.

Question... Can 0.015 cause that kind of a slam? I've had 3 rear end guys look at it,and they all say it's fine! and I feel the same, but I heard what it was doing. Has anyone been where I'm at and fixed it with side gear washers?I'm at my wits end. Please HELP...a couple more days without my Z and no telling what I might do or to who!

You didn't mention halfshafts or driveshaft U joints....did the diff have slop before you tore it apart? ie. rotational play on any of 3 input/outputs with others fixed?

hopefully others can offer more...and not too sound stupid but you're sure the SLAM you heard under the running car on stands was the same KLUNK you hear while driving? I've heard many noises under a running car on stands I've never heard on the road.

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

The halfshafts are ok as are the ujoints[replaced 2 of them ] And I know what you're saying about noise when you are under the car.

The only mounts I have not changed is the front eng. mounts ! I watched them during torque and they were ok ??...but perhaps they are soft enough to be letting the engine shift back and hit the stops... that sure would answer the SLAM kind of feeling when I go on and off the gas. I think my plan will be to put the diff back togeather, and let the .015 side gear slop be there, and replace the front eng. mounts [i'm sure they are orig. so it won't be a waste]

Thanks for the reply.. you got me out of the box.

Here's another thing to check...

I have found that if the through-bolts that fasten the diff to the mount are installed upside-down (i.e., with the nut on the bottom), there is not enough clearance between the end of the bolt and the crossmember to prevent it from crashing into the crossmember on decel (when the nose of the diff drops).

This is an easy mistake to make, since it's usually easier to install the bolt like that. It looks fine when you inspect it statically, but when you drive it, you still get the 'klunk'. Check to be sure that the bolts are oriented such that the nuts go on top of the diff, not below.

Well thats just what I had done with one of the bolts.thanks for a good tip...I put things back together yesterday [bolts in the right way]and should have the eng mounts in today, and we shall see !! Thanks again for the tip.

oh yeah, food for thought

I had a 'clunk' that I wasn't noticing going into gear/low speed shifts a trans guy noticed. Turned out my driveline geometry was less than optimal (still is) and the input/output bushing (or something...not my area) on trans was getting worn prematurely...in any case their was some play allowing this minor 'torque' to klunk as it loaded/unloaded the driveshaft. Doesn't take long to create that clunk either..worked fine for 4 yrs after it first came about...his fix didnt' last long as I haven't got to correcting that alignment (my motor spacers got centre after one reinstall after pain by others, not in the proper JTR offset....., then I duplicated it this last spring/doh!)
