L6 Flywheel Machining

I thought they just used a fly-cutter on a mill for flywheels? I thought they just clamped it in a rotary index on a mill and milled off a few thousands. I'm thinking the only difference would be the machined grooves would be running across the surface of the flywheel instead of running with it. Maybe they feel that prevents slipperage on the disc? Just some thoughts.

I've been told that the L6 flywheel has a .005" step in it and the friction surface and pressure plate mounting surface must be turned to mantain that .005" difference in height. This is such a small difference that it wouldn't seem to be a big deal, would it? Also my new clutch says not to use a lathe to turn the flywheel. I'm having a hard time finding a shop with a special flywheel grinder and may just have it done on a lathe. Bad idea? Thanks for any insight anyone may have.
