tightywhitey185
I need some insight on how to identify this motor.I have in fact tried researching this with the search tool on here ie engine identification, vin locatoins etc to figure this out but couldnt get anything too specific so dont get mad at me guys.I have a 1974 260z with a tag that sais manufactured 1/74.I know for sure that it is an early 260 becase the signals on the front of the car are below the bumper rather then in the grill. The factory paint code for the car i believe is 302 green leaf metallic. The car is now red but has been painted that way a good ways back but whoever did this before me did a pretty good job cutting in everything red like under the cowl below the wiper moters all the jambs pretty much everywhere except the floors and tranny tunnel where it is still green and underneath where i spent hours scraping old undercoating off.My buddy the previous owner said that he things the origonal car was an automatic tranny. The car now has a 4 speed manual.I know for damn sure the block that is in the car sais L24 on the right side of the block towards the back below the head.I hear everyone talk about all the specific identifications for what they have as far as what head what tranny what intake etc.How do i figure this out.It is also running 2 weber dgvs 2barrels wich seems to be pretty uncommon or at least un popular...why?where do i find all these identifications on this motor?I seem to have a bit of a bastard here but the car is really damn clean.Any advise please please. blue72
Sometimes it can be difficult to find the right search terms. Just keep reading the relevant threads you do find and look for more pertinent search terms. Most of the engine bay identifiers are cast into the parts themselves. You already found the L24 followed by the engine's serial number stamped into the rear of the block. The intake manifolds have nice big N33, N36, E88, etc... cast into the tops. The cylinder head is cast with a number below the #1 and #2 spark plug as well. Transmissions are a bit more difficult, but there are threads here that deal with identifying them, as well as a number of websites that'll help you find out what year tranny you've got. There's even another thread from earlier today with someone else who just bought an early 260Z with DGV's on it.
