have to ditch the distributor-its got slop in the drive workings and its just not up for my application.i have 6 cop units from a v6 mercury outboard motor.4 pin -looks like it wired like a gm ls type coil.i have an older ms 2.2 running ms&se.from my research it looks likei will have to build some kind of circiut so the ms can read a vr sensor.any results on this?

I'll be keeping posted on this topic as well. I don't know anybody actually running it in the Z yet. Might have to fish through the msefi forums.

With megasquirt using the L, your best luck is to wire them up to the wasted spark option w/out having to get to crazy setting up sensors in the head and all.

I bought a VR sensor, using LSx truck coil packs w/ rontyler's mount.

did some reading on msefi.com.ended up on the digikey electronic parts website.since my ms is firing from hall effect sensor off of magnets on flywheel i think i will switch to a cherry ch414-nd hall effect gear tooth sensor -my ms is already working off of a cherry south pole magnet sensor.then run a toothed wheel onthe crank.then will use leds a,b,c to trigger in wasted spark. i like the cherry sensors because they are mounted in a threaded cylinder-its easy to mount.my machinist had some 60 tooth steel wheels laying around-got 1 for free.need a source for ls type ingnitor plugs though?suggestions please

With a coil per plug you could run wasted spark or COP ignition. Wasted spark only require 3 coil drivers, COP requires 6 as you know. If the coils are like LSx style then you can easily drive two coils per ignition output for wasted spark. Just a thought so you wouldn't need to build extra circuitry, you may want COP instead.

Just because it is COP, doesn't mean that the coil driver is in the COP module. Example: RB25 engines have a COP configuration, but the COPs do not have the driver built in, they are in a separate module.

I'm sure you know this, but the coil driver converts a low voltage, low current trigger out put from the ECU into a high current pulse that fires the coil. The MS cannot do this alone, unless you use VB921s (which are just coil drivers BTW). The problem with VB921s is that they are not potted for engine compartment use, and will require you to build a circuit board, and attach them to a heat sink. OEM COPs with the driver built in is the only way to go IMO.

If your COP modules have the driver buillt in like an LSx coil, then you can drive them directly with the +5V square wave output of the Megasquirt.

Here is how you want to configure COP modules that have built in drivers for use with Megasquirt and a standard 36-1 (or other tooth count) CRANK trigger.

OK and yes, this is technically wasted spark, but because you have a driver per coil, who cares. Both sparks will be equal in energy, unlike duel post coils that will have one spark a little weaker than the other.

I have tested this configuration, and the MS ignition output signals can easily drive two COP modules that have the DRIVER BUILT IN.

My thinking is that wasted spark was just as good as true coil on plug sequential ingition (whatever you call it) and a little easier to wire up since it requires a smaller number of outputs from megasquirt. In wasted spark the coils will have to fire at a faster rate, but I didn't think it mattered for most applications.

the mercury outboard coils fire every revolution-the motor was 2 stroke.i will be testing the wiring on them soon-i hope the pin configuration is the same as ls chevy .my goal is to use a minimum amount of external wiring.need to goto radio shack for a 555 chip to build a circuit to make a wave form to test the coils.

If you have a stimulator, use that.
