Mikeszcar Or how the hell did this end up in my garage

Recommended Posts

I"m writing this for my buddy mike do to the fact that he would rather be a lurker than help contribute:-D

Well my buddy Mike picked up this car about 3 months ago as a little project, His goals are to make a daily driver that would see some track use. At first he was looking at picking up a 510, but decided on a 1973 240z.

He found a z that was sitting in someone's back yard as a project that never got started, the car was pretty much a pile of junk, the interior was trashed and stuffed full of parts. So the first thing that needed to be done was clean the car out and to start stripping the car.

Next was the body work, luckily the car wasn't in that bad of shape. It had your normal rust that you would find on a Z of this age, but nothing to major. So we loaded it up on a trailer and took it over to a friends house. Once there we started working on the body panels getting rid of the rust and shaving a few things here and there. Once the body was looking good we shot it with a coat of por-15 and called it a day.

From my buddies house the car made it to my garage, and thats where we started to tackle the suspension. First thing we did was tear out the front suspension and start to rebuild that. Luckily for Mike and Me we have a full machine shop at our disposal at work, so anything that is going to be reused has been media blasted and painted. Not really much else to say so i'll let the photos speak for them selves.

Went and picked up a a Subaru steering rack for a 2003 WRX the other day for 100 bucks, so we have to take the cross member off and get that setup. Mike picked up some celica tie rods to use on the rack and I have a spare set of whiteline steering rack bushings that we'll also be putting in.

Mike and i went to work today and and made some spacers for the toyota sw12 brakes that should be showing up this weekend hopefully.

Then Mike media blasted his shock tube, cleaned and painted it. then we put new bearings in.

also got some new top hats for the shock towers. We'll be putting it all together tomorrow.

So today we started putting the struts together, got the new Koni's in along with the eibach springs. We went to put them on the car and noticed that the nuts had some better days on them, so we ran to napa and got some new nuts for the struts.

Get home and the Toyota sw12 brakes where at the door along with the new brake rotors. So we took the calipers apart and started to get them clean and ready for powder coating.

So got a little more work done this week, not much but some. Apparently powder coating around here is to much for my buddy3225165493_3b5f6059db_o.gif so he decided to paint the brake calipers instead. this turned out really good, there's about six coats of red paint on these bad boy's.

Got the front suspension in and bolted up, and yes we know the swaybar is not hooked up properly.

we also got the rear suspension pulled out and ready for tear down.

So we got some work done this week, not a whole lot but some.

Got the right parts for the brakes, according to our findings there's two different sw12 brake calipers. One has to lager piston bores and two smaller piston bores, the other style sw12 just has four larger piston bores. well we got the later, but ordered the first type brake caliper rebuild kits. I had to use two kits just to build one caliper.

On the right is the kit we needed, the left one is the original kit we ordered.

we had also taken the rear suspension off, so we started to media blast and repaint some of the various brackets.
