this isnt actually about a problem with my z. i have come across a manta(80's mid engine kit car chevy SB) and it has the "stock" 4spd transaxle which will in no way hold the kind of torque the SB makes. so i was thinking i would use the whole t56 transaxle as used in some corvettes. so what im asking is if any of you know what blocks the t56 will bolt up to and if there is any kit to bolt it to an older chevy SB block. and what year (etc..) corvette to get one out of? and basicaly any info on this will be appreciated.

if you are talking about the transaxle in the rear of the newer model vette.... i don't believe it bolts to a block at all. i think it bolts to a torque tube and to the rear subframe. in any case a LOT OF WORK to get it into anything including the original vette.

web page My info is a little dated but with a proven record.. Kennedy Engineering has been hooking American v engines to Porsche 914/911 (or VW) transaxles longer than any one can remember. If the Manta has the Porsche transaxle.... count yourself fortunate but if it has a Corvair Transaxle... it will probably break because of the way it was mounted upside down. (stock VW tranny forget it)

T56 will not work as is. Even in the C5, it's still not a transaxle in the classic sense - more of a transmission which has a diff bolted directly to the back.

Traditional transaxles used in mid engined cars have the gearbox behind the differential relative to the bellhouse. You're best bet is the Porsche unit which is proven and relatively plentiful. It's expensive, but, there you go.

These guys are mostly VW racers, but they have a transaxle called the Mendeola MD5 for mid-engine V-8s.

Also, check out the GT-40 kit car pages from Europe.

They put 400 hp through Audi and Renault transaxles. smile.gif
