Guest Anonymous
Not a Hybrid Z question but the group here is pretty damn sharp, so.... As well as a V8 Z, I also have an original 1973 Jag XJ6 (I'm a sucker for punishment). It seems to be eating alternators. I've put in two; each has lasted around 4 months. The symptoms are that they stop charging and the "Ignition" light stays on. They were rebuilt units (not new). Am I getting a bad batch of units, or can someone suggest something else to check??? All else seems OK..... Thanks!
Guest Anonymous
Have you had the blown units checked out to find out what happened? I would guess that if these units were good when you put them in and they blew for no apparent reason you might check to make sure all the wiring connected to the alternator is good. If you are shorting out somewhere due to water penetration or insulation failure, your diodes would blow and it woudl stop charging. If an alternator is run without any place to put the current (i.e. a wire that sometimes get disconnected...etc) the energy created needs to go somewhere and instead of creating problems in your electrical system the inner "circuit breakers" of the alternator, the diodes, blow up..rendering the alternator useless. If this is the problem...diodes can be replaced without much trouble...just a thought. SpencZ
