240zBoy
Got the project in my garage about a week ago after searching forums for about a year and finally finding a 240z with the criteria that I was looking for. It obviously has floorpan rust and the usual rust area problems. Interior is pretty rough and is going to be tackled first once I get the floorpans welded and section of frame thanks to a window seal leak. Along with a replacement panel for the rear hatch. Was able to retrieve a lot of needed parts off a parts car he had so that helped out a ton. Anyways, here are a few pictures of it and the interior gutted. Hope to have a lot of fun with this sweet little ride.
240zBoy
Floors are cut out along with the frame rails to be out of the way for the msa floorpan and rail kit I purchased. I am currently making my templates for all my welds so I can have a buddy do it all in one trip to save money on u-haul. Atleast I got the stock engine running today after an oil change, new oil filter, Mystery oil to help break in, used craigslist fuel pump, and some rewiring. Once the pans are in I can atleast drive around so I don't have to pay for U-haul. Now for titling and all that crap:icon56:
240zBoy
Went to get a quote on welding today but was shut down and pissed after them telling me a quote of 3 g's. Not to mention being told I should dump the car and get a new body and that my dreams of a v8 will never happen cause the car will twist to peices. I guess I can only take it as motivation. Mostly because the actually frame rail (Pretty much our lil z's support) has to be replaced due to rusting out in which the floorpan rail must attach to. Which I told him I would buy the replacements for 400 online. I guess it takes $2300 in labor to get a guy to weld pans and one new rail in. Sadly the stock floor pan rails were holding on by about half an inch of rusted metal. At the time I just thought my new saw was a beast getting it out so easily:icon53:. So now it looks like I have to pick up welding. While I wait for that to come and me get practice at it ( A good 2-3 weeks ) I will be starting my body work. Lucky me, I find loads of dime sized holes all over the car hidden underneath bondo and primer from the last owner. So called repaired:nono:. What a large project for a kid who turned 16 last week:biggrin:. Atleast when I am done it can be practically called a ground up build lol. Plus with a welder I can properly repair the rust now and fabricate my own brackets for my seats. In the end a $$$$ saver and much cheaper than the welder prick. 240zBoy
Ended up borrowing a family friends welder for much less than buying one. I went crazy with that thing all though I am not going to lie it was not that pretty:mrgreen: Good thing I went out and bought seam sealer and a grinder if I ever need it. I welded in a frame reinforcement, both driver and passenger pans, battery tray, rear panel support for my new panel that always rust out on the hatch seal, and a little up on the passenger wall as the pictures show. Sprayed it all with some black primer to keep the surface rust away as it was starting to come. The neighbors must have been laughing when they saw me with a rattle can hitting every peice of bare metal. Next step is a little fiberglass work on the wheel well and then por-15. Must say I am really pleased with how this is all going besides that my rather large battery I just bought will not fit anymore lol BTW If a moderator sees this could you please " PRETTY PLEASE " move it to the s30 section so people can comment and give me advice. 240zBoy
Finish all the suspension besides the brakes. Dropped the car a half an inch. Even found an r200 and mustache bar, plus picked up an engine hoist and stand. Got some pictures of the new floors. Painted with por-15 and then lined with stick and peal from lowes. Just gotta paint the bottom now.
240zBoy
Floors are all done now and I got my new bushings on. Decided to move to the hatch were I discovered even more rust underneath the sound deadener:icon45: Went to work on that yesterday and it came out good. Used the last of my por-15 and some more peal and seal. BTW that is not rust in the spare tire well, just debris from sanding the hatch floor and the light above. 240zBoy
Motor/ Transmission is out and sold. Time to get a nice coat of por-15 on the engine bay. I am using this stuff quite a lot but I just love the finish and protection it offers. Especially on the frame rails and battery tray. Will have pictures up for everyone when thats all done. Finally feel like I am making some progress.
240zBoy
Purchased my JTR KIT for the v8 swap. Along with that, the r200 swap is complete and all new fluid installed. I love the feeling of getting major steps in the build out of the way and that was definately a pita. Now that my differential is hopefully done I will be looking at some 350 engines and t-5's in the next couple weeks as I finish touching up the engine bay. 72240Z
Looks good 240zboy. I'm in North Carolina, what part of the country are you in? My car already has an LT1 and a 6 speed in it. I raced it like this and it didn't twist in half. Here's a video of the car the first week I got it running It was my daily driver till I started the rust repair. Good luck with your car. 240zBoy
Thanks 72240z, I love your car and have actually watched that vid a couple times haha. I live in Everett, WA so not really near by but me and you seem to be in the same boat so it's fun to see how you do things and how I can incorporate them into my car. The fact that you raced your car with rails similiar to mine and more hp than I will have is awesome to know as that was always in the back of mind after I reinforced, and coated her with por-15. I have used 3 quarts of that stuff now hahaha hopefully it works and keeps rust away like everyone says it does. Here's a picture of before and to where I am now Edited March 6, 2010 by 240zBoy
240zBoy
Recieved my sanderson headers from JTR and they are sweet. Look like they will get the job done and can't wait to use them. To add on to that I put the car on a trailor with all my parts to bring my dad's friends house. I will show you guys in a couple weeks of what it's doin there if ya know what I mean. Bodi
I have a white 72 a lot like yours. I need to replace my frame rails and floor pans as well. Both of my frame rails. WIll you tell me how that went? I did not buy mine yet. There seems like there will be nothing to weld the new rails to... Do you have any pictures of what your looked like and how you did it? 240zBoy
Bodi, Sorry I do not have any more pictures of the install besides the one I attached in this post. Let me say this, the floorpan install is actually pretty easy once you aquire the kit and welder. I used a large saw to trim a little bit off the new pan I did not need though. All you do is align everything up after the rust and floors are all cut out and use a jack or two to keep it in spot before tacking it in. Then release jack, finish up welds, and apply seam sealer. As far as the rails, I put a footlong piece of L shaped steel VERY THICK inside that, then hung out the rail to give me a little more metal to weld the floor rail to. Tacked it in by drilling holes in the frame then tacking through the holes. I had left over fiberglass resin so I stuffed it "Not that it will do much" and then heavily coated por-15 on the inside and outside. A little over kill but that is a very important part of our cars. -Hope that helps Bahraini240z- You wait and see what I got in store in about a week. 240zBoy
Here she is. Will be dressing her up and out of those old clothes but it has an rv cam and a bw t-5 so I am a happy clam. Looks like a crazy sleeper like that but I kinda skuffed the orange paint off of the valve cover so I will just keep with my plans and get some chrome in there. 240zBoy
Alright well scratch that motor. Ended up being a mis-stamped block. Two number sources on the block read 5.7l but one came up as a 5.0l so I cracked it open and got a bore diameter of 3.75. Sucks but new motor will be coming soon. I got the msd hopefully all wired up right and the holley pump arrived in the mail today along with the fuel safety switch all from Summit. Trying to get this baby movin!! 240zBoy
Update: Got the car back with an actual 350 in it lol. Been really moving fast to try to get this thing running. So here we go -Got another engine in. -Wired up the Holley Red Pump -Wired up the entire engine according to JTR "Trial and Error will come soon" -Re-wired up MSD -Installed the new clutch line -Got my hood nice and smooth -Flushed Radiator, stripped and repainted with engine paint "Looks brand new besides some wavy fins", reinstalled -Picked up some new spark plugs -Installed a new starter solenoid as plastic part on first one snapped So I need my flexible radiator hosing and fan with spacer to come from Summit Racing parts wise. Biggest part to tackle will be figuring out how this darn Q-Jet gets hooked up but we'll see. Still got to catch up with all my fluids and bleed the clutch, but that can be dealt with while waiting for my parts.
240zBoy
Still got to bleed the clutch and cap off some vacuum hoses on the q-jet but I am going to try and start tomorrow when I do not have any work. Wires are still messy but I will clean them up once I know for sure the wiring is correct. Dressed her up a little and what not.
240zBoy
Still have not started thanks to a bad carb. Waiting for another one from a friend but in the meantime I ordered a new toy that's in the mail. Can you say HOBART 140. haha. Will be making my own rear strut brace so I can have a proper harness mount, custom seat brackets, fill holes on bumper, weld a couple patch panels on.
