YeaJimi
Hey, I just picked up a MAF from a 80' 280zx for my 79' 280zx. Before grabbing a used unit I went to autozone to check pricing for a new one. They came back w/ two different parts for my year; one for early 79' ($400) and one for late 79' ($270). I wasn't sure when my Z was made, and the prices were way too high, so I went and grabbed a used one. Long story short after installing the unit from the 80' Z my car runs very rich, 11:1-10:1ish. I was wondering if anyone has used an inline resistor (or even a variable resistor w/ a knob) to lean up the intake charge?
Administrators BRAAP Posted June 21, 2009 Administrators Share Posted June 21, 2009 (edited) First off, NO 280-Z or 280ZX EVER came with a MAF! They did however come with an AFM, The MAF you are referring to is called the Air Flow Meter, or AFM for short. The AFM is a completely different animal than a MAF. The terms really aren’t interchangeable and when looking for parts, you could end up with the wrong part! So, whoever told you that is a MAF, next time you see them, tell them they are full of BS and don't trust that persons automotive/mechanical advice, ever again!!! WARNING! Technical info to follow.... Seems to be more and more common today for people to throw out technical terms without actually knowing what those terms are, or mean. Not trying to throw anyone under the bus here, just trying to educate those who may read this so that when they are communicating technical info, they are comminuting the correct technical info and receiving the proper technical help. MAF, (Mass Air Flow sensor) and AFM, (Air Flow Meter). 2 totally different sensors that are often incorrectly mistaken for the other. The AFM, or Air Flow Meter, as used on the ’75-’83 Datsun/Nissan Z cars is NOT a Mass Air Flow Sensor. The AFM measures the FLOW of the air, i.e the volume of air entering the engine, not the MASS of the air. The Z car AFM does utilize an air temperature sensor to help correct for air density due to temperature, but still does not directly measure the air MASS which is also affected by humidity, pressure, etc! The MAF, or Mass Air Flow sensor measures the actual MASS of the air, taking into account not only the volume, but also the pressure, temperature, humidity, etc. Therefore, you can clearly see that these two instruments are not interchangeable physically nor in casual or technical conversation. MAF is not AFM or vice versa. Sorta like the difference between a 2 stroke and engine and a 4 stroke. you don't call a 2 stroke engine a 4 stroke, well... because it's not. As for the resistor trick or how to tune the factory Z car EFI, per the #2 in the rules you agreed to today, just a mere 2 hours ago, please exercise the search function... Here is link to start out with... http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=132075 Good luck, Paul Edited June 21, 2009 by BRAAP
