350 problem

Recommended Posts

I have a problem with my 350 and i cant figure it out so i am hoping someone here may be able to shed some light on it.

Ever since putting new (well not new but very low k) heads on i have been having dramas getting the rockers set right.

We have done the whole sequence of each cylinder firing and tightening so that you can feel some tension on the push rod, theres no slack between rocker and lifter but the push rod still turns fairly freely. then we do 90 degree(1/4 turn) to set.

IS that correct way to do them?

Problem then is that they are still a bit noisy and now it has developed what i can only describe as popping through the carby at full throttle above 3500rpm or a bit lower under load.

to me it sounds as if the inlets aren't closing fully, we have tried a couple of different ways to set them.

Ie: doing inlets when the exhaust just starts to open and exhaust just before the inlets fully close. We have tried half a turn instead of 1/4 etc etc...

We have tried timing at 12,10 and 8 degrees and also gave it a stab by ear and no matter what we do the "popping" persists.

Does anyone have any idea as to what is causing the "popping" sound.

Just to ad when i first put the heads on it was fine just a bit to noisy for my likin
