internal or external alternator

Was it '73 that GM started using internally regulated alternators. I'm about to purchase a GM alternator on Ebay to go in my Z so it is less of a wiring mess when it comes time for the V8 conversion, plus the extra amps won't hurt. Most of the auctions are '66-'72 and then '73-'86 and everything from '87-up are nolonger V-groove. Correct? weird.gif

Thanks guys

Well, I'm getting one from OReilly's. 1 wire excite, 55 amp idle and 115 amp cruising. Brand new, life time warranty and chrome plated for $120. Didn't tell me the excite rpm, but I doubt it's anything above 1500. Hoping it's more like 1100, which is about where my Z idles most of the time according to my tach  Now if my alternator will keep going until I get this one in...

Dont buy an alternator from EBay. You dont know if you are getting a good one or not. You can go to your local auto parts store and get an internally regulated alternator for about 34 dollars. That is still cheap and you will have a warranty if there is any problems. Just ask for an alternator from say a 1978 Chevrolet Blazer.

Hope this helps

Agreed, nearly the constant failure of alternators is in the diode packs. I'd bet a good many on Ebay are faulty or weak, a good many parts are just pick n pull stuff collected by people as they're 'job' and sold on Ebay to make money and they usually easily cover they're time in the yard.

Go to CSK (Kragen, Chucks etc) or autozone or napa or whatever, and just get one rebuilt, at least your pretty sure it'll work and you have a warranty as mentioned.

I bought aftermarket last time a nice chrome unit (powermaster?) for about 120.00 as best as I can recall, expensive, but one wire no messing around and it works great and its brand new.

Regards,

Lone
