Guest Anonymous
First post, and I wanted to firstly say hi to all (hi all), and also to ask a few questions regarding SBC-Z's. How do these types of conversions generally do in stoplight to stoplight situations? Anyone have a quarter-mile times resource? I've perused the site, and found the JTR links. What would be an educated estimate to get a 74-78 240-260 up and running with a late-model LT1 (93+) SBC? What about with a Borg-Warner T-56 included? Would the rearend hold? Can a 8.8 inch Ford rearend be used? Sorry so many questions, I am really interested in finding out as much as possible.. Thanks!
Guest Anonymous
Thanks for the links. Yeah, I shoulda hit the search engine first.. I'm extremely impressed with the possibilities apparent with the 70's Z cars as a hybrid project car.. Just so you guys know, I currently drive a 1999 Mustang GT, and would love to find a fun, bad@ss weekend streetcar!
DavyZ
Good, then you know how fun a powerful car can be. We here have our preferences as to what engines we use, etc, but we pride ourselves in not being wed to a particular brand--in fact, many of us would do something totally different the next time around! Nothing wrong with Ford, nothing wrong with Chevy, Crysler, Nissan, etc, etc. A converted Z-car is nothing short of impressive at the typical stoplight confrontation. The 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times are pretty sweet as well. The Z makes a great sleeper, and in being lighter than many powerful cars (like a Camaro for expample), makes for an exeptional handling car as well. There are a slew of aftermarket components available and more are being developed by members of this board (Mike Kelley, Mike Gibson, Ross Corrigan, and many others). Like Scottie says: bring a lunch with you and an open mind and have a lot of fun! BTW, Scottie GNZ, who posted first to your query runs a very mean, very black, very fast turbo Buick powered Z car. He is looking at the 10's this year. Not bad for a VERY streetable Z car... Davy [ August 06, 2001: Message edited by: DavyZ ]
BLKMGK
Looking at 10's? He's running 11.1's now shifting into OVERDRIVE before the lights! His car, on the street, can hardly get any traction on low boost w/drag radials - I've seen it! An LT1 would be a great swap but cost will have much to do with where you get the motor. Figure $3K minimum (IMO) and as much as $1700 for the T56 or as little as $800 if you score well. It really varies. Don't forget the wiring harness, radiator ($180), cooling fan ($35-100+), fuel pump (cell?) and other things. It adds up but when done that GT will feel like a slug I promise. You've probably come up against a Camaro or two, probably lost (I'm a Ford guy but...). Now imagine that Camaro with about 1000lbs removed form it
Guest Anonymous
Thanks for the input. From my searching, it sounds like a 71-74 240Z would be ideal for my intentions. I'm thinking bare bones, no AC,6 speed and gobs of torque.. I've been really surprised as to how naturally a small block fits into the engine bay of these cars. At a glance, it doesn't seem feasible.. As for my GT As stated, it's a 99 GT 5 speed coupe. To date mid-13's @101mph have been the norm. I had her dynoed @ 251.7rwHP & 287.2 ftLbs. I've had the opportunity to surprise a couple of C4 vettes of the line.
DavyZ
Sounds like a nice, fast ride. A V8Z is faster with that kind of power. I think you'll do well in making a cool weekend warrior. It's gonna be fun! Davy
Scottie-GNZ
Bogart, welcome! Here is a good place to start. http://grannypotts.freeservers.com/Times.html Super Dan and Andy, we need to put a link for this somewhere on the Main Page. I will let the V-8ers that have a similiar setup answer about the performance they are getting. As for the stock rear holding up, I do not know, we have not discussed that topic much . Use the Search feature in the Drivetrain section to get info on R-200 diff and Ford 8.8 swap. Hope you some spare time and pack a lunch .
