Surge Tank Placement?

Hi Guys,

I just picked up a '71 240Z Track car, that is set up for road racing. This is Clifton's old track car. Some of you may be familiar with it. I have never had a pupose built race car before, nor a Hybrid Z, so this car has a lot of firsts for me. It is turbo charged for one, with a Megasquirt system, so I need to learn about fuel injection. My previous track car had an L28 fed by SU's.

I have it at a race shop right now getting a fiber glass front end fitted on it. One of the things the shop owner brought to my attention is that it has a surge tank mounted very close to the rear valance and next to the fuel cell. That could be very dangerous if I get hit from behind or go into a wall backwards. His suggestion was to move the surge tank up under the hood where it would be more protected. Unfortunately his shop deals mostly with vintage racers and he does not have a lot of experience with fuel injection either. My questions is: would moving the surge tank up under the hood be a good place for it? Or is there a reason that it has to be next to the fuel cell? As I undersand it, the fuel cell now has a Supra pump inside of it and the surge tank has a Walbro unit in it. We also could not find a vent in the system anywhere.

Let me know if moving the surge tank under the hood would create any problems. Any other suggestions you may have would be welcome too.

TIA,

Marty

I put this 2 liter surge in my '71 S30 behind the mustache bar and in front of the OEM tank. It is mounted upside down underneath. This is designed to be mounted in a trunk. The nice thing is there plenty of holes so it can be mounted upside down. It looks like it is fusion welded at the seams and the bungs are hand welded very nicely. For 95 bucks it was well worth it. Also the shipping only took like five business days from Hong Kong.

That looks like a quality piece. Very nice. Mounting it upside down didn't affect the function? Are you using it on a street car or track car?

I have always wondered about ordering from those overseas suppliers though. Seems like if you had an issue with them, you would have to write it off. Just my impression and I am not trying to bash them. I just have had no exerieince with them.

I have an RB26dett in my car. It is intended to be a streetable track car. Initially I had just an external Wlabro 255 in line on the OEM tank On launches and sharp turns I would get a sudden drop in fuel pressure. I added a lift pump and this surge tank and have had no problems. Mounting the canester upside down has presented no issues as of yet. Also as I said before there plenty of holes on what is now the bottom so if I want to add a second fuel pump when I upgrade turbos then it will be easy. I understand your concern about overseas purchases. I felt at the time it was so cheap it was worth the gamble and to my suprise it was a great transaction and an awesome part.
