Guest Anonymous
I dont know anything about body alterations so you guys should know best. Reading older posts on 280zx conversions and found that the only kits available for it place the engine in the Scarrab position due to the firewall being 3 inches closer. What is involved with moving the firewall back? more hammering? And if i managed to move it back the 3 inches then would i be able to use the JTR kit? Id feel more confident using the JTR kit due to your guy's success stories.
DavyZ
The JTR kit does not apply to the ZX as it is a totally different animal. Do not go through the trouble of moving the firewall in the ZX since you may run into trouble (not to mention open a can of worms) with the items behind the firewall. The JTR kit is the most successful kit IMO for the Z, that's true. However, if I was doing a ZX (Ross Corrigan may convice me of that due to the increasing success of his ride) I would do what Ross did and NOT try to use the JTR kit since it does not apply anyway. Since the ZX is totally different in its construction, the term "Scarab" does not apply either. Please understand this. A ZX V8 conversion is just different, not at all inferior to a Z V8 conversion. Does this make sense? I sense that you are stressing over an issue that is really no issue at all. Davy
Modern Motorsports Ltd
Davy got it all bang on. Crossmember/firewalls etc are in different places in Z's and ZX's......I found out that placing it DEAD on the crossmember in a ZX is the same in RELATION to the firewall as in a Z which it seems you understand. However, weight distribution b/t the two setups still seems very similar. My rides lighter than OEM and rear weight bias. You can follow JTR ideas for most except motor mounts where you just shim appropriate offset as per JTR but bolt dead on to crossmember. You could move it back 1/2-3/4" if you really wanted but hood latch and valve cover/serviceability would go from EXCELLENT to poor so not worth it IMO. 51% rear weight is enuf for me. any q's feel free.....hopefully Davy and I cleared that air....moving a firewall....whew! wish I had some neighbours with that kind of energy!
