Scottie-GNZ
Anyone know of or thought of converting the rear quarter windows to a flip-out design? I think that would greatly improve the poor ventilation on early Zs and reduce or eliminate exhaust fumes. I know it would be extremely difficult to make the entire assembly hinge and swing out, so how about this idea? Imagine if the entire glass was replaced by a piece of Lexan but with the center cut out to match the original shape about 1" from the edge. Cut another piece of Lexan the same size but slighter shorter on the wide end. It would overlay the other piece but have a hinge to pivot from the wide end, have a latch on the narrow end and a seal all around it. Am I making sense? Surely someone else must of thought of this. Jwink25
Interesting idea. I have a Ford Maverick that does that. I am going to take a look at how it works and maybe come up with some ideas. I have my rear windows out of my Z car right now...I dont' see why someone can't modify them to hinge. Maybe I can use the hinges off a Maverick even. Hmmmmmm.... you got me thinking about this now. You would have to use a seal between the window and car that was on the thin side so it wouldn't make the window stick out to much. Or, cut out the window mounting area and recess it inward a bit. Things get tricky from here. But your idea is a good one.
DavyZ
Scottie, RXO510 (James) and I talked about this on a thread way back. He even sent me some rear quarters from a 280Z 2+2 to see if I could assess the feasibility of converting the 240Z fixed quarters to flip out using some parts of the 280Z 2+2 glass. The windows were lost in the mail thanks to USPS and the idea didn't go anywhere. I would love to use as many Nissan parts as possible to keep that "factory" look. Glad you brought up this idea again since it has merit! Hopefully some of the other guys will weigh in with ideas & opinions. Davy
Guest zfan
I think that would be a very interesting study and not to mention good bit of fabricating. Good luck and if you go forth with it let us no how it turns out. Mike
Kevin Shasteen
The 280Z 2+2's had flip out windows and many of the Corolla Hatchbacks had flip out windows-perhaps you could get their hardware from them. Are you talking about a general "Venting" that when this flip out window is open-it is an actual window? Or are you referring to a double pane window that seals the inside from the outside & at the same time also vents the interior so that the interior is not open to the outer elements?
