240zphilly
hey all, I am currently swapping a 5.3 iron block out of a chevy truck into my 72, was wondering when using the th-350 trans, will have to use the johns cars trans mount and modify it? or can i still use the JTR th350 mount? SUNNY Z
p.s. has anyone successfully used the stock z auto console and or auto shifter on a chevy trans? i really dont like the look of a big ass b&m shifter busting out of my center console. I was gonna post pics of my last setup, but then I saw you didn't want a nice shifter........... I have an old C4 corvette shifter, if you'd like that. Has provisions for backup lights and everything.
Dan Juday
Are you going to be drag racing? The th350 is not a good match for a street driven Z. If you're dropping an LS motor in why not use a modern OD automatic? It'll be a much better street car with a fourth gear. 240zphilly
well sunny, the thing is i like the look of the stock interior, and i also dont like the incomplete look of an aftermarket auto shifter in any car, really. i dont think it would be so bad if someone could figure out how to keep the center console in tact or make something to make it look intact, even if it wasnt stock. as for the overdrive, yea, my tolerance what makes a good driveable street car is probably way higher than most peoples, so i have no issues with a 1:1 top gear... i like the noise. plus, turbo trannies are strong, cheap, and easy to rebuild. overdrive autos are less so. 240zphilly
and yes, dan juday, its much more a drag racing application than a autocross or a road race type of build, thats why i dont mind running the auto for consistency. and hey, about the original question sunny, what mount are you using? do you have an genIII/IV with an older trans? I'm building my own mount for the t56. I HAD a SBC / TH350. I didn't mind it, but I drove it to the dragstrip (60mi) and it absolutely screamed on on Interstate. Of course it was with some 24" tires. haha.

Pyro
Yes, the stock 280 shifter will work fine with a gm 3 speed or 4 speed auto trans. Just takes some mild modifications to get the linkage arm length right and to drill a new hole in the gm linkage arm. Where you drill the hole is important as that controls the amount the trans linkage moves as compared the the stock shifter. Did it on a friend's conversion. He use a th350 then switched to a 200r. took awhile to get it adjusted so it would go from 1st to park correctly. I remember drilling a few different hole locations in the gm shifting arm to get the ratio correct. Has been a few years and can't remember all we did to it, but it wasn't much. I also remember grinding the stock shifter gate a little longer for 1st gear. if you have some skills and tools then you should be able to do it fairly easily. Make sure you put in a neutral safety switch.
