Rear tail and hatch rust, please help!

My buddy and I are gathering idea's for repairing the rear hatch area directly above the tail lights on a 70' 240. The rust damage is very extensive as the hatch has not been opened for many years. We will try to post some pictures of the affected area. So far the only solid idea we have is to remove,(cut), the rear section off and replace it with the same cut section from a donor 72' 240. Has anyone ever successfully done this, and if so, how? Thanks.

I was in the same position as yourself. My old hatch had a whale tail that was held on by 72 rivits! Took off the whale tail and the damage was just too much to waste time fixing the numerous holes and a little rust. Bought a mint hatch from a '70 with the vertical defrosters for $75. What's wrong with the hatch from the donor '72 that you have? Why not just use that hatch?

RacerX,

Thanks :D I need to take some more pictures, all I have is the one you see in my posts. I'll give you the run down untill I can snap a few more shots... pretty clean body, white split spoke w/polished lip 17X7" wheels, VW headlights, white painted grill, coilovers for that cool stance and that's pretty much what you can see. There is a bigger photo of that picture in my personal gallery. I should have more pictures posted within a week.

Depending on how bad the rust is, you could fabricate a section yourself. Thats what I did....I cut and ripped out a 12-14 inch rusted out section of the rear deck lid then cleaned up all the underlying metal without cutting or tearing out anything around the light. Then I just used a 6 inch vice, a ball pin hammer, and some simple measurments and some eyeballin and presto new patch for the rear deck lid. A bite of welding and some grinding, and you cant tell I replaced it except for the paint not matching. If its not that big of a area give it a try, I replaces about 12-14 inches and it wasnt that hard just make sure to think about which bends to do first or you'll end up reworking you previous bends. If this its pausible, then good luck finding a donor or that guy on ebay selling panel. I say it once for $135 for a small 5x40 panel, hell I'll fab me a piece. Good luck
