Guest Anonymous
I don't know that much about sbc's or domestic V8's for that matter, so please bear with me. Do you use just normal oil or is synthetic better? What octane of gas should I run? (BTW, I have a 327 w/ Holley Super Comp headers, camel hump heads, edelbrock manifold, holley carb, and glasspacks.) Where the hell is the fuel filter? My dad has a timing light, how do you use them? I would ask him but he's out of town for a while and I want to check the timing. What should the timing be set at? When I do a tune up what should I replace in the ignition system (besides plugs and wires)? Sorry about all the questions, but I want to get this thing running better. Thanks
Guest super280z
nick, sounds like a pretty sweet motor you've got there.. well there is definately alot to learn about z-cars and even more about sbc's i'll try to hit some major points for ya. ok about the timing light, bust it out, put the clipie looking thing on the battery, and the other clippy thing (plastic)on the #1 spark plug wire. go ahead and start the car. you should see the gun flashing like crazy. (if you dont try wiggling the battery clip.) shoot the gun at the harmonic balancer by the timing marker. its usually on the driver's side but who knows. you should see the timing mark on the crank every time is comes around in the light from the gun. now you can mess around with the timing by lightly turning the distributor. as far as Gas goes, it really depends on what kind of compression the motor has. if you put cheap gas in a high compression motor it will ping really bad and run bad. but if it's a low compression motor, cheap gas is great. most 327's had a decent compression ratio so you'll want to use a good 93 octane gas and probably an octane booster. about the fuel filter, it could be anywhere in the lines from the tank. just follow the lines from the gas tank until you see something with clamps on bolth sides or something that looks fuel-filterish... hope this helps. Guest Anonymous
Thanks for the help. One problem though, the highest octane gas I can get here (in Fairbanks, AK) is 90. Should I use a whole bottle of octane booster per tank? Thanks again for the help. I'll finish up this tuneup and put some higher octane gas in and (hopefully) enact revenge upon the Supercharged Chevy Truck that beat me. Guest super280z
a whole bottle with about a half a tank should do the trick.. if 90 is all you can get, stick with that and keep your eye out for some race gas. that outta put that truck in his place. good luck and keep it safe.
