240z VG30e swap

Recommended Posts

First, I hope this is the right forum for a build thread. If not, I apologize, and will move to wherever I'm told to go.

------

So, what I have planned is a regular old NA VG30e out of an '86 Z31 300zx, into a '71 S30 240z. (Yes, I'm going crazy with the acronyms and part / model numbers. I'm hoping to make this a google friendly thread. :) ) Depending on what parts I can get out of the donor car, and how well they fit, and how much extra fabrication I feel like doing, I may also swap in the 5 lug hubs and brakes.

As for why this particular project, well, it's what I've got. :D

Thus my commentary about "what I can get out of the donor car". :) Anyway, the price was right.

The first step will be cutting away enough of the rear end of the 300 that the rear wheels will turn again, so I can move it around. Then, to clean the 5 years of dust out of the engine bay, label all the wires, and pull the motor out. I figure I'll do the timing belt while it's easy to get at, but other than that, the motor was running when the car got hit, so I'll just leave it alone.

Then I'll stick the 240 up on some stands, sling the motor and transmission into the hole, see what lines up, and what needs to be fabricated. Make some engine mounts, find somewhere to hang the ECU, make a hybrid driveshaft, and voila, it's a car. Should be cake, right? ;)
