  1. I am not a serious drift type. But I do drift for kicks. S chassis, 13 & 14's are by far the easiest type to build and drift. Information on set up is abundant, parts are readily available, and the chassis is very predictable and provokable. But they are far too common now. I remember the days when no one knew what drifting was....

I plan on building an S30Z one day soon...I hope. Not primarily for drift, but of course I will drift it on occassion. The main draw back of the chassis is the wheel base. A lot of people state that the car has too much snap oversteer. The chassis is flexy, and set up info for drifting is basically non existant. But it can be done.

Case in point. I went for quite a few laps with Ryan Hampton in his Falken Tires / Drif Alliance '67 -'69 Camaro. Not the ideal drift car. But the car was awesome!!! It just takes some R&D. I hope to see more Z cars at events. If it's something you want to do, don't let people tell you that it will not do well. Even FC /FD3S are difficult cars to drift. Adapt and over come.

    What I would do...

-Seam weld the hell out of the car.

    -Custom fab numerous chassis braces

    -Weld in cage

-Fab a power steering rack to fit ...

...I say use maybe FC / FD3S, as extra angle tie rods/rod ends are

    readily available.

-Increase caster settings to help with snap oversteer.

-Motor of your choice / strong clutch kit

-Of course change out all bushings

-2 way r200 clutch type diff.

This is just a few things, but you get the idea, add what you think would benefit your style. I hope to see you guys out there! And if you're in Cali, especially the Bay Area, don't forget out our newly built Drift Land Course, formerly Altamont raceway. Irwindale style, with no walls!!! Sessions every thursday night by NCDA.NET!!!!

  2. Okay. Okay. So I guess maybe some of you don't realize I'm asking for advice on spring rates for a not so common engine swap, that has effect on weight distribution and such. The search function is great. It just doesn't really help with the specific questions I had. I mean, calling vendors is of course an option. But if I can't ask the friendly folks on this forum for their advice, then why are we all here? Isn't this site about sharing information?

    Point taken.

    So, I guess I'm going to try maybe 150 F, 200R or 200F, 250 R...With Illuminas For starters.

I'll eventually try the weld in camber plates, and adjustable arms.

Coilovers, Bushing kit, LSD already going in. Cage, and chassis bracing will probably be the first thing I do.

Thanks to all that offered their opinions. HYPERTEK, are you on Ziptied too?

  3. So, just wanted to hear your thoughts and input.

The details...It's a '72 with an Redtop SR20. Packing the normal bolt ons, still has factory T25. ( Will upgrade to BBT28 ) She is making 200 whp an 7psi, 250 at 14psi. Once the turbine, injector and tune is upgraded I expect about 310whp. I doubt I'll ever want more.

So this car is really going to be multi purpose. There's tons of events I will be going to. Gotta love the bay area's events. I love to drive and just want to have fun, while remaining competetive and furthering myself as a driver. Events: SCCA Auto X, Rally X, Track days , hill climbs and the occasional Drift day....And of course, aggressive street/canyon/ mtn fun.

Please feel free to offer some constructive advice on suspension parts selection, and set up. I am really needing to know what spring rate / shock will work best. Is there short stroke struts available for S3O.

And what control arms, camber plates are recomended. And why? Cost?

    Lots of questions. Thanks guys.

  4. Christian,

    They also make FNO1RC in 9jj +15, or 10jj +12...

I've seen 8jj +0, looked fresh. A little fender rolling, possibly a little more negative camber.

So with a 15 mm spacer you'll have an effective offset of +1. Not bad.

What's the spec on the mesh wheels you have now? They look good.

    Better with spacers, of course.

No offense, but I really don't think those wheels would look good on an S30...

    But function wise...They work!!!!

    Remeber....Pit house! haha

  5. Z/R32 Brakes are awesome on lighter cars than they originally came on. It's a common swap in the 240SX tuning circles. Cheap, and effective. GTR33/34 Brakes were Brembos.....the BCNR33 ones differed from R34's. The 34 and Z33 brembos are the same. I'd like to get my hands on some of those. Wouldn't you?

As far as rotors go. Search some of the silvia forums. Z32/JZA80/3000GT Rotors are commonly available pre drilled for 4x114.3.

I forget which rotors are being used for the "all factory" type big brake set up. Either supra or 300gt.Big Rotor...12 or 13". I'll check my pc (fav/links) at home-at work right now.

When I finally pick up an S30 I will definitely rock Z32 or better factory Nissan brakes.....I'm a nissan NERD. That should be enough explanation.

  6. Jmortensen- Great video. Love the car, especially seeing it sideways.

    The sound is amazing.

    Good stuff! More please.

JohnC- Please post the video of the rusty old datsun. I love your car!!!

Everything about it..... If it's not too much trouble, I can't be

the only one that wants to see it. Even withouth sound...it would

    still be great!!!!

  7. Damn. Your car is so FRESH! I love it. I know that you built it to be an all rounder. But the only VIDEO I have seen of it so far, was dyno run and some highway cruising and launching. Can't wait to see footage from the autoX.

Thanks for the pics. Now we're all a little more inspired.

  8. ProjectRB240sx: No worries. We all have those moments.

SR240Z: When are you gonna post pics of your shop car at the track or AutoX?

I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants to see it do more than go

straight. I'd love to see some action footage. After all, the greatest

advantage of the SR swap just MAY be the handling effects.

***I started a related thread in the NON tech forum

  9. (I searched and only came up with a few results, forgive me if I missed a similar

    thread)

It seems as if video of S30's in action are rare. I'd love to see footage of Z cars at autoX, track days, rally and so on. (NOT DRAG) What do you say we start an official video thread...with links or whatever. I think it would be great, what do you all think?

    - If you got 'em, please post links

Mods: I thought this would be the most appropriate section of the forum,

I'll move it if I'm mistaken.

  10. And Its Been Covered Ad Nauseum' date=' And Its Not In His Price Range.....

Reading Comprehension > You. Come On Man We Have Been Guiding Him Along For Over 3 Threads Now. Some Of Us Have Tons Of Experience With Sr's While Some Have General Working Knowledge Of Sr's With Vast Experience In Performance Engines In General, None Of Us Are Stupid. In Fact I Told Him Many Times To Do What You Just Laid Out Like You Were King.

    Btw:

550cc Injectors Can Be Had For Less Than S15 480cc

You Left Out Your Big Limiter The Maf

Down Pipes And Cat-back Aren't Available For The Sr Swapped Z-cars Its Straight Custom Exhausts

Bov's Aren't Required To Make Any Pooower

The Gtir Turbo Has Been Proven To Be Weaker Than The S15 T28bb And Less Effcient.

Ohh And The Big One A Enthapy Tune With A New Z32 Maf And Plug Would Cost As Much As A Haltech Or Microtech Standalone (which Provide Maf Delete Features).... The Only Benefit Of The Enthapy Is Simplicity And Accountability.[/quote']

Whoa. Easssy. I think I was posting trying to guide this fellow along, as you were. I never made an attack on you or anyone else's knowledge or advice. I think it's safe to say we're on the same page as far as SR tuning goes.(read some of my other posts) I'm sorry if I upset or offended you or anyone else...I neve implied that anyone is stupid. We're all here to share knowledge and experience. It MAY have come across wrong.

I did forget to leave out the Z32 MAF. Whoops.

I wasn't trying to come across like I was " King ". But you are coming across like someone that's very pissed off at me. Is that really necessary?

Sorry man. I was just trying to help.

  11. Some of you may be a little misguided on SR tuning.

It's so easy to make power.

    ...Think , SIMPLE

It's all about the tuning. Most people in America go way overboard, never reaching the numbers they thought they would. S15 engines. You gotta be kidding me. Sure it's nice, new and makes the most power from the factory.

S14 motors....why? The best part about these two motors is the turbine. VTC isn't that special. I mean, if you have the extra money, sure, why not. But most of us are all about the bang for the buck. So without further rant....

The SIMPLE way to make great power in a redtop S13 SR20DET....

    - Bolt ons:

Ex.Mani, Down pipe, catback, FMIC, intake, bov,

    Fuel pump, S15 factory injectors

    RNN14 GTiR T28BB, or S14/15 T28BB.

(S15 specR has the BEST factory SR turbine, it's diff from lesser S15's)

    - RS Enthalpy tuned ECU + BOOST.

What do you think this would put down????

How about a SOLID, 300WHP with matching TQ numbers.

It's common in the world of Schassis tuning.

  12. Old school japan hot rod style. Sounds like what I want to do. I say crazy L series. There's nothing like completing the look you want with a triple carbed motor under the bonnet. After doing some research I too quickly found out that the price of building a 300hp NA motor is steep...steep enough that you begin to lean towards the venerable RB26. I myself want to the experience of building/tuning/racing with a Nasty L series....but WILL have an RB26 in an S30 one day.

What makes the RB26 so appealing (to me) is that it makes so much power with bigger injectors, and a simple tune. What can be better than having an incredibe powerband and 300 something rwhp on a STOCK motor. Classic race car styling, modern motivation. ......11 sec zeroyon. Perfect.

Now if I could just win the lottery.

  13. Okay. Okay. I'm gonna throw it out there for those that don't know.

I love SR's. They feel so "right" when properly tuned.

I know that no one is bashing them....but how about some maybe new to you facts.......

In the beginings of The japanese GT300 series....JUN AUTO ( Yes that JUN AUTO, 8 sec zeroyon Silvia JUN AUTO) Campaigned a BNR32 with a SR20DET.

YES!!!! They pulled out the Famed RB26.....and did quite well in the series. It was done mainly for handling I would imagine. I think it had around 500ps.

In recent times....GT300 Teams have been doing these types of small displacement swaps. For instance....Many a GT class JZA80 Supra were running 3SGTE motors. Crazy? How could they pull out those bad *** twin turbo Straight six engines.....only to replace them with 2Liter inline four turbo motors???

    Even on the streets......

There are FD/FC3S with SR, Z32/Z33 with SR, JZA80 with SR, JZA80 Supra with 3SGTE. HCR32 with SR.

These motors are bad ***. (Not to say anything about other options)

Just simple thought provoking information. Do what you will with it.

  14. Okay....I stand firm in my last post, L28ET is always fantastic. SR are great too. For my soon to be S30, NEVER will I put in a silvia motor. They are badass, yes I know. It's just not what I want, it just doesn't seem like the best option for me and what I want out of the car.

For clarification on SR20DET power and configurations.

-S13 motors began as redtop, and later switch to a black top valve color.

They do have the best flowing head, it's the low port head. Turbine was

T too small 25. The intake manifold was THE bottleneck.

-When they switch the valve covers for kouki S13, and later RPS13 that's all they changed. Just the cover of the valve cover.

-When the Zenki S14 was released there were significant changes to the motor.

-Head was switch to a high port design. Variable valve timing was added.

-Turbine was switched to a T28BB

-S15 motor was the ultimate stock SR20DET. Besting the S13 engines 210HP,

For a claimed 250. Torque was up as well. The motor is sweet. The SPECR model also has a fantastic (model specific) ball bearing turbine. Coveted in the simple and effect SR tuning circles. Nothing like making 320-350 rwhp on a stock turbine!

Tuning an SR is easy. Most 240SX owners take un-necessary steps in their quest for power. All of these crazy, expensive mods are not as effective as a simple set up.It is all about bang for the buck, Unless you still live with your parents!!! Basic upgrades.....The usual....front mount, Exhaust mani, Down pipe, cat back, test pipe???, BOV, T28BB, S15 injector (or larger), ROM tune and boost control is all it takes to make good reliable power. And hey it's pretty much stock. Many people make serious power with basic engine work on top of these mods. Cams, gears and what not.

With these simple mods an S13/14 hauls ***. Drop that in a lightweight early S30...wow.

But then again, it's not exactly cheap to tune any nissan motor. Well with the exception of the L28ET. We'll see what I end up with. But right now, I'm leaning towards a 4AGE......

    JUST KIDDING

  15. NA....you know I actually prefer NA motors over the turbo types. I just like the way they feel. ON3GO, I applaud your desire to use a rare and modern motor for this project. That's awesome. Sometimes you want a simple, fun road car. You know..."fast" is relative, "fun" is ALWAYS where it's at.

A RB with ITB or carbs would be great...I see it all the time in Nostalgic Hero, and autoworks old car magazine.

SR (NA) is great too. But the problem with these motors is the torque and powerband. Maybe this would suit your needs, maybe not.

How about a VQ30DE? There is someone on Freshalloy doing this swap into his S14. He's using a Z33 6speed mission. Very nice. I love the way those motors feel...so smooth. Maybe that would suit. I'm sure it would be relatively cheap for the motor, the trans....well, good luck with that one. I'm sure there's enough young, spoiled, 350Z driving teenagers that are going to make our junkyard shopping trips very interesting.....

  16. Straight six all the way. A z must rumble and growl. SR does sound nice, but it's not the same. We all know the glorious sounds of the L6.

I've debated your questions myself....If you must have an SR fine, I would save money by dropping in the L28ET, using the money you saved to build the rest of the car. I mean, I don't know the condition of your car....but we all have a dream spec sheet in our minds.

Just pass some time with a well thought out simple round of mods on the L6....you'll have a better car in the end...And when you're ready, change to some modern nissan motor, if you must.
