  1. i have installed a S14 rear sub frame into my 280zx and the benefits were night and day.  I had so  uch more adjustability on the multi link rear suspension vs the trailing arm of the original 280zx.  I had rose jointed and made my original trailing arm suspension fully adjustable with custom made suspension but i was still not satisfied with its hi speed bumpy cornering performance.  the swap to the s14 multi link worked the magic for me.  time and investment well spent.

  2. dav_it,

That's an awesome built thread.  I am learning a lot from the pictures you are posing up.  I have an issue with my RB30/26 being to otall and i have had to omit my strut tower bar which goes across from left to right.  I am planning to fabricate bars like yours which goes around the engine bay and connects the frame rail to the suspension tower joint by another bar to the firewall.  My car is a street car therefore all these bars need to be removable for accessibility, hence the only difference is that it will not be welded on.  I hope your Hill climb campaign pays off.  I will be routing for you!

  3. Hi guys,

I have not been in here for a long long time and have not conributed for just as long.. feeling very guilty. during my break i have learned how to upload pictures in this forum.. hahaha

well cut the long story short, i was looking to buy a atrix speed gnose fromt bumper but couldnt find a supplier and would have cost too much to ship to malaysia anyways so i have come to terms with not buying but making my bumper from scratch. My last bumper was made of metal and since a recent flooding in the last gymkhana i attended 3 weeks ago my custom made metal bumper got swallowed by my own car upon impact into 1 feet of standing water!! anyways here are pictures of my new bumpers progress taken today.

thats it for now guys..:) chowz

  4. Yasin,

some things are just ironic and soem of the idiocracies we deal with are mind blowing.. this is one of them... i am too lazy to create another account ie phtobucket etc for fear of forgetting passwords and losing time in uploading pictures.. sorry.. i boils down to being plain lazy and not a tech lovey dovey kinda guy. i prefer to work with my hands by getting them greasy and dirty...hahaha

i guess the facebook thingy is the solution for me.. i can take pix of the chassis and my new paint scheme now....:)

You managed to convert your suspension to the S14 and can't figure out how to upload pictures? I find that funny..I know I know smart ass!

Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

  5. Guys,

I have had to resort to using VG30DETT pistons as my RB30 block came from aust. with a big bad scratch on the piston sleave. I do have 9.1 compression ration hence i cannot boost high... I am curretnly running a max of 1.4 bar boost and the turbo spools fairly quickly. The engine is very responsive and can rev to 8500rm without problems. I would'nt know how a lower compression rb30 would feel but i have been driving my stock pistoned rb25det for 4 years before building a rb30 and the difference is huge. engine revs better on my rb30!!!

guys do it cheap and good.. bore the block and stuff vg30dett pistons in your rb30 and you will have no problems if you are not chasing alot of boost. during tuning i boosted a max of 1.6bar and i was getting 600whp on a dynojet dyno... that on pump gar 97ron and a to4s turbo.

    z-monster out!!!!!!

  6. Dear 260det,

I did not document my S14 swap. quite straight forward that one. i can however take a picture and post it up on the net though...

260det.... i know i can do the swap... i am technically sound in doing it.. i just do not want to chop up my strut tower and i was looking for picutes of your swap as a form of referance. ....

did the swap make a huge difference in handling? was the trouble worth it? or are the gains very minimal and i would be better off keeping my stock rear crossmember.

  7. dear all,

I have searched the site hundreds of times and have only found the Japanese guy Takun doing a s13 rear axle swap on a 280zx. If I'm not wrong I think 260det has also done something like that but cant seem to find a step by step illustration on the whole swap.

I am currently running a RB31DET in my s130(280zx) it pushed 450whp and a fully build 280zx rear axle with poly and solid bushes. MLSD R200 long nose and a nice customed suspenssion set up. She runs great but I think she can do more with a R32 skyline rear axle swap.

My first question is; is the swap worth it? I do track/autoX/daily drive my car very often. I think there is more to be had from this chassis after I carried out a full S14 front suspenssion swap including adjustable lower arms. I have found that my car has much better mechanical grip and highspeed stability after doing the swap. Shouldn't a r32/s14/s13 rear axle swap improve my ride and handling?

My second question is, are there documented step by step pictures taken to carry out this swap?? If yet pls give them to me. I have also seen the Japanese guy butcher up his rear shock tower mounts. I do not want to do that.

    Pls advice.

  8. Are you sure about the RB26 pistons sticking out of the block? I thought they had a lower compression height. Something around 1.18.

When I took this photo, the RB26 pistons had a lower compression height than the stock RB30e.

    2630piston2.jpg

    Careless,

Stealth-z is right about the rb26's piston dome being lower then the rb30's. However careless is right about the vg30 piston crown being flush with the block deck.

the reason why i was worried about my compression ratio is due to the fact that the difference between the rb30 and the vg30 pistons dome high being very much different and taking into consideration i had to bore out my block to stuff the vg30 pistons to fit i wold have messed around with too many variances to get the desired compression ratio.

i was happy to hear careless rough calculation of my compression ratio being 8.2-8.9:1 but stealth-z did bring up a good point. if the calculation done by careless is in the ball park then i wouldnt bother with anything else and have blind faith in that calculation and assemble that engine as is.

I will have it running by friday next week of which time i will take a full day sto run the engine in by clocking 1000km's on it and tune. So if you guys give me the confidence to seal the engine now and put it back into my car.. i will give you guys my actual hp figures and graph to give you guys something to look forward to...hihiihh...:)

u guys are the best. i really do get very excited in coming to see the ideas we are exchanging here.... keep it up.. i really appreciate all the help and advice you guys are giving.

    cheers,

    Kevin

  9. hi guys.. i have finally fitted the vg30dett pistons into my block and at TDC it seems that the pistons line up right at the edge of the block to make both surfaces level with the buldge in the center of the piston protruding a little. The pistons come out way father then Stealth-Z's picture in the first post@TDC.

i do not think i will be skimming the block as i will try to see if the compression ratio on this current setup will work nicely as a daily driver or not. i am guess for now that if the stock rb30 pistons were giving me 8.5:1 compression ratio, the vg30dett pistons are going to be a tad bit lower maybe 8-8.3:1 compression ratio and thats should be bearable and responsive enough i hope. guys pls correct me if i'm wrong.

i had compared my new rb30 to my stock rb25 which i replaced and the piston height at TDC are very similar withthe exception of the extra dome on the rb25 piston protruding over the block deck much more then the vg30 piston. if the rb25 compression ratio is 8.7:1 then my current set up on the rb30 should not fall far from this right guys...:)

as you all can see i'm not as scientific as you guys and i work alot on theory and pictures... hahahaha

  10. Dude wheres the car? Oh that thing behind the chick...lol

Hahahah thats a good one... i hate that the money shot i have has that chick standing there.

Any one of you want a fiberglass bonet??? i have a mold for the ori.. the air ducts are extra... i'm taking orders for the US but i will need to find out the shipping of these pcs to the states... the bonet itself oli cost USD300 a pc to make... shipping is the killer...let me know if any of you are interested.. it oly weighs a feathery 15 pounds i think...thats a guess
