  1. Hi Guys, just wanted your opinions on whether i should ditch the TBI system on my car. I'm running a 74 Z with a 350 SBC with Brodix track 1 heads, hydraulic cam with 112 lobe separation, roller rockers, MSD A6L ignition back to a TH350 with a shift kit and 3000 stall. I cannot get the projection 4 set up to run cleanly. it seems to run too rich at idle and too lean at high rpms. Getting the balance just right is almost impossible. I'm told fuel injection can be my best friend, but at the moment it's a real pain. The searches I've done on the net all indicate that with most users, it's a case of perseverance not satisfaction and I'm wondering if it's better to go to a carb or to go to MicroSquirt. I know nothing about MS so I'm leaning towards say a 650 DP. If I do, I presume I'll have to run a replacement fuel pump or can I use a regulator to reduce the fuel pressure to suit? If I run MS are there any pitfalls I should be wary of? Any thoughts? Also is a 650cfm carb a suitable size? I'd like mechanical secondaries and electric choke....... thanks David.
  2. I couldn't agree more about buying a ready made car. The amount of work($$$) put into mine before I bought it makes it a very affordable car. I don't (didn't) know much about mechanical stuff either but I know 1000% more than I did before I bought it. sometimes after pulling something apart, I look at the fabrication and engineering that went into it and think if the previous owner paid for all this to be done, then I've got a $20,000 car that I paid half that for. it's still a long way from finished but I'm learning something new every time I work on it and I know I'll sell my daily driver before this one any day. like someone else here said, i work on it a little then check the website and then work on it a bit more. it's very comforting to know that there are always people around -both in cyberspace and round the corner - who can dig you out of the proverbial. Just be sure to get the structural engineering checked really carefully.... almost everything else is replaceable.
  3. where do you get an od unit for a muncie? is it an od on 4th only?
  4. my 350 260z is registered as a 327. the block is the same and without measuring there's no external refs to the size.
  5. I have a 260 with a 350 sbc and a th350 trans. it was built in 1999 and has been registered in NSW till now, i'm just roadworthying it ready for registration in Victoria (fingers crossed). I also have a VX Calais with an LS1 (220kw at the flywheel). The 260 is currently handling like a very fast truck but I love it. BTW it weighs 1240kg with aluminium heads/radiator/pulleys etc. I need to change the trans to a manual as soon as spare cash allows.
  6. Hi Pete I've followed your history with both the projection 4 and megasquirt so I'm pleased to get your response. It is an analog one with fuel pressure to the unit at about 1 bar (14.5 psi) which seems about right. the wiring is all ok and we've got good power to the ecu. everything was running fine when I roadtested the car before buying it, so I assume the return line is ok - I will check this and the clog/spray pattern tho - thanks.
  7. Hi Guys just a little problem you might be able to help me with, My Holly projection4 fuel injection system is causing me and my tech some problems, After having got it to start and idle nicely, I can't get it past about 1500rpm cleanly, it stutters and farts around. I 've adjusted the 2 power (1 & 2) pots with no luck and have taken the car to a FI technician but he has no experience with this system - it's the 1st one he's seen. I'd like to get your opinion and experience before going back to him with my wallet open... Any clues? thanks, David
  8. a couple of months ago I bought a hybridz - a sbc 350/th350 in a 75 260z. the unit was built in 1999 and has travelled about 1000 m since being built. I'm slowly waking it up again. the engine is a 4 bolt unit imported as a short block from the states and fitted with brodix track 1 heads, roller rockers, hydraulic lifters and projector 4 TBI. it was fitted with a 'sports' cam in the US as part of the short motor. My concern is that the TBI needs tuning as starting the engine is very difficult - it fires and dies instantly and only runs after 5/6 attempts. I understand this is indicative of too rich idle setting and is washing the oil from the bores and doing damage. I'm told that before i set up the TBI I should adjust the valve clearances. I dont have any information about the cam duration/lift and am told i'll have to measure the lift before setting the clearances. is there an approximate clearance i can set? I don't know how the measure the lift. any suggestion would be very helpful. cheers David
  9. has anyone had any experience with a SBC matched to a Skyline/300zx 5 speed gearbox? I have been told by my local S30 mechanic that the box will fit, but needs an adapter plate. I'm contemplating this box as a replacement for my 75 260's TH350. the twin turbo 300zx box is strong and aparently comes in two lengths, is cheaper than a tremec by far and on face value looks to be a good option. I don't have the experience to do this swap myself and would job it out but I don't want to start and find that it's going be a headache. Any thoughts?
  10. My Holden (GM) has a Gen III engine(45,000 miles) with significant piston slap and when it's cold sounds like a diesel for about three minutes. I am negotiating with the dealer to have "modified" teflon coated pistons fitted at GM's expense. they assure me that there's nothing wrong with the engine and the work is being done as a 'good will gesture.' I always allow the engine to warm up at idle and move off when the rattle has disappeared. am I right to do this then? David PS: this engine came from Ontario and over 10,000 were bought by GM Aust without warranty.... and they tell me that the rattle 'doesn't concern' North American owners.
  11. I agree with the TH350 and plan to change it to a 5 speed, probably a rebuilt supra box as they're plentiful here (I've been quoted A$950) & will probably cope with about 220hp at the wheels. the 350 sbc has Brodix track 1 aluminium heads, weiand manifold with projection4 TBI (?) and custom headers and has about 1000 miles on it. Anything else I should watch for???
  12. Hi, I read about a lot of guys with V8 Zs in various states of rebuild, repair, whatever and I'm wondering if anyone has run one as a daily driver for an extended period of time. And if so how reliable etc etc, I have just bought a 350/TH350 and have plans to get it to the point of reliability that I can get in it and go without wondering if it'll get me there and back. Any thoughts?? David
  13. doh, I guess i mean a sbc - my ignorance is showing! the engine number is C61113928 and it was sold to me as a 350ci 260Z but the registration papers list it as a 327 so any help identifying it would be good......
  14. has anyone had any experiences (good or bad) with this setup on a LT1?? I've bought a 260z with this set up fitted and I'm curious about the drivability and reliability of it. An EFI engineer I spoke to on the w/end said it's about as crude a fuel injection system you can find.
