and read this
http://datsunzgarage.com/heads/
L24 is a 240z, L26 is 260 and L28 is 280z(75-78) and 280zx(79-83).
Oh one more question. This is not a head i want to use to to a turbo right?
-
Ok thanks guys! I will get it.
-
It has cut outs for injectors...so yes it will work on a 280z. It is a 280z head.
OK thats what i thought but he says he toke it of a 240 so i was just makeing sure.

You'd probably see about as much of an acceleration change by just swapping to a fiberglass hood. Modifications for a L motor that's naturally aspirated is pretty piss-poor unless you're going to get radical and dump 2k+ into a full build.
Reducing the weight will also have the added benefit of better handling, better braking, and better economy. It's a much better place to focus your wallet when starting off. If this is a '77 we're talking about and you haven't removed the bumpers that's a huge bonus right there too, especially the front bumper. That thing is HEAVY and it's in the worst place, as far forward as it could get.
Between the bumpers and hood that'd be like adding 20+hp to your engine which you might never have seen from an intake and exhaust.
Oh, and going up on throttle body size will have next to ZERO HP increase. It'll just make it "feel" faster because you've lost top end fidelity in the pedal travel. The stock throttle is not a limitation on mild builds.
Exhaust might net you 15hp AT MOST, and that's assuming it's mandrel bent.
Intake would probably net you less than 5hp at best.
Your money would almost be better spent adding megasquirt with a good crank triggered timing setup. Not only has your stock EFI probably lost you quite a few ponies over the years due to connection quality degrading, but it's also not tuned aggressively like you can get an active timing map setup like megasquirt can. The downside is that you can easily spend $1000 getting megasquirt installed and tuned. But if you think about it, doing exhaust right isn't cheap either, and this will have a much more dramatic effect.
Just my 2 cents.
On another note, a L28ET conversion can be done at home (not include tools, so assuming you have them) for less than $500, and considering you can still find motors from time to time for less than $300 then I'd say that's the most bang for the buck you can get. But it's not for everyone. But hey, 200 ponies out of the gate is far better than you'd ever get doing bolt ons to a NA motor.
Ok thnak that helps alot! and sorry if this is a dumb question but what is a L28ET conversion? I have seen it said on here but have not been able to find out.

Will L28 N42 head 240Z head work on a 280z head?
Found this head and want to see if it will work on a 280?
http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/pts/2531792883.html
And is this a good deal?

Sure, do you want to gain power? Then it will do it. Just don't expect huge gains.
Yeah i want a little more power but i dont want to put thounds in to it.

Years ago I bought a '70 Toronado with the high output 455. After building the transmission, and fixing a bunch of vacuum leaks I drove it for almost a year. An awesome car. Biggest problem was ripping the side walls out of the front tires. I hear a lot of people complain about FWD cars, but that Toro made a real impression on me. Take a bunch of measurements, and if it'll fit I say go for it.
Yeah i got some measurements and i am pretty sure the tires would hit the block lol plus i would have to cut and weld all kinds of stuff in. I think i am just going to go with a 340 i have one of them to.
-
If you still want to do this sometime, I have a '76 L28 for sale you can use to build.
How much are you wanting for it.
-
From having a friend who had a 70 Olds 442 with a destroked 455 in it, I don't think you could keep tires on a Z. That Olds would smoke the tires off of it from a 50mph roll. Olds was about a 3,800lb car, I think the engine will fit and enjoy the Torque. May have to use stock exhaust manifolds, just guessing on that though.
Yeah i talked to a few friends and they said it would be alot of power for the car.
-
So what do you guys think about a Oldsmobile 455 in my 77 280z.
-
Fix that rust first!
Yes body work is my frist thing to do.

I would recommend that the timing be checked and set to the factory recommended setting. If you are looking for some good tips on getting your car running like it should, check out http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/reviving/index.html, especially the section about "Tune the car" (toward the bottom of the page).
Thanks that helped alot i will see if i can fix the promblem.
-
Ok looks like i dont want to do it lol thanks for the help.

The plugs are indicating that it is running on the rich side, but are not oil fouled. I would recommend doing a compression test (with the engine warm), but just for information sake.
OK so should i do a timeing check to?
-
It sounds like overfueling/running rich.
What engine/ fuel system do you have?
What is the history on the car? Milage?
Pictures?
Its the stock l28 77 280z. And its the stock Fuel system that came with the car.
I bought the car from the frist owner about six mouths ago. The lady i bought it from said it has ony run over once so if thats true it has 160,000 on the engine. I planed on rebuiled it and geting rid of the few rust spots but if i have to do the engine stuff frist.
I toke pics of my engine and of a spark plug. And the one with the black on the concret wall is back up to it and the exhust left that on the wall.

Black smoke out of tailpipe,TOO RICH! Are you sure its oil or is it gas instead?
I think it oil. But it dose smell like it is burning rich.
-
What makes you think you need an engine rebuild?
How do you know "oil" is on the plugs?
How many spark plugs are involved? Which ones?
What are the compression numbers?
What color is the smoke out of the tailpipe?
Get the idea???
The plugs are black thats why i think its oil.
All six plugs are black.
I dont know the compression.
Its got a kind of blue look to the smoke and when i rev it up it shoots black soot out spots on the ground.

Hi i am geting oil blow buy on my spark pulgs. Dose any one think it might be something else them the piston rings?
My car also idles at 1000 rpms for like a min then drops down below 500 rpms. I know i need to rebuild the engine so dose any one know where the best place to get a rebuild kit for a 77 280z?
