  1. I have a 1974 260Z and the servo just went south. I came to a stop and had to stand on the brakes to get it to stop. when depressing the brake pedal, the engine would increase rpm. At the time, I thought what the heck...After checking the thing out, the diaphragm must be bad, causing a vacuum leak, thus the increase of rpm.

I called all the local parts stores, and they can not get a replacement. I called Nissan and they said it is no longer available. Napa will send it off to get rebuilt.

Have any of you encountered this problem, and if so where did you get a replacement?

  2. That is awesome. Near 9 second run is mind boggling. Our best (240ZV8) is 13.3 but we are working on it this winter and hope to get it down to the 11's with nitrous and slicks. We built the 240Z to run top end races,(Silverstate Nevada race) so it will need a major overhaul to be fast in the 1/4 mile. Our other car is a 1960 Falcon with 428scj engine and nitrous. We just spent $3,000 worth of go fast goodies for next year and hope to be in the 9's with it. As you know, the money never stops flowing into a project. I really do not want to know how much I will need to spend.

Great job... I to would like to see how you installed the 9inch Ford rear end.

    :2thumbs:

  3. You beat me to to that Nigel ^^.

The nice thing is that if you are very equal in the rear end, alinement, tire pressure, etc, you can get traction out of both tires often, in a straight line. This is why some people thing they have a lsd that really do not.

I have been loosing traction the two times I took it to the drags, and thought that it was right wheel spin. Because of your post, I just took the car out front of the house and got on it. It left equal tire marks from both wheels as far as I kept my foot in it.

So with this information, I will take the car out to the drags with the new slicks, and see what happens. Maybe I will not need a lsd.

  4. I can see that working for a solid rear because the whole axle would try to rotate counter to the force applied by the pinion gear to the ring. But with an independent rear suspension, I think all it would do is try to is rotate the differential itself. No vertical force can be transfered through the half shaft joints.

Yep,, you have a good point. It would not work for IRS units.

  5. Back in the late 50's to improve traction at the drag strip, when we had open differentials, we used to stiffen the left rear spring so that it would plant the right wheel on launches. I would think that with adjustable shocks and spring spacers, you could do something like that for our Z cars. Has anyone tried this method for traction at the drag strip? I will give it a try the next time I am at the drag strip. For you young guys, the torque action from a launch tends to raise the right rear up, causing the right wheel to spin.

This was a easy, cheap way to help traction back in the day.

  6. I have a R200 3.54 gears, and just purchased a used R200 with 3.90 gears. At first I was going to buy a limited slip assy. for the 3.90 gears, but they are out of my budget. So I will just swap to the 3.90 because I want to drag race the car. 240Z with ZZ3 350 engine, 700R4 trans. I purchased some drag slicks and wheels for the car.

My question is,,, what weight synthetic differential oil do you recommend for this application?

    Thanks

  7. I did a search for the above, and found threads for lsd only. Anyone using synthetic differential oil in their open R200? What brand and weight are you happy with?

I called Tim on the Power-Brute lsd, and he said that he still has 7 power-brutes on back order. He is not sure if and when they might be in.

  8. No experience, but just so you know they'll bive you the equivalent of a 3.833:1 diff ratio, unless my maths is wrong ;)

    Cheers,

    Rob

I think that your math is correct. I came up with about a 3.90 which is about what you came up with.

The taller the tire the larger the patch on the ground, so I hope the softer compound of the drag radials overcome the smaller patch of rubber on the ground.

  9. I have Goodyear Eagle GT+4 P215-60ZR16 tires on my car now. Traction is a problem at the drags. I purchased two BF Goodrich Gforce t/a drag radials that are P215-60R14 and mounted them on some light mag wheels. My differential is a 3.54 open R200.

I hope the shorter sticky tires will:

    1. effectively lower my final drive ratio

    2. Not loose traction.

Anyone have experience with these short sticky tires?

  10. Lol. R200s are a dime a dozen in the junkyards around here.. I couldn't find an R180 if I tried!

On another note I was at the JY and found a complete Z31 turbo.:willy_nil I was jumping around like a little kid in a candy shop.

I pulled the whole rear sub-frame, diff, axles, control arm, et...Only to find out that the car wasn't originally a turbo...:twak: No LSD diff.

Around here, R180's are everywhere. I have two of them. I have three R200's just in case I blow one in our 240ZV8. Finding the axle shafts that have the four bolt flange for the R200 is difficult. CV shafts are the norm here.

    Redding Calif.

  11. I purchased the above differential, and it came without the short axles that fit into the differential. I was told that I need the ones that came in the 1975-83 280Z or ZX that had manual transmission, and r200 differential. They came two ways, one with the cv unit and the other one is the one that I need. They have a four bolt flange. Anyone have a pair that they want to sell?

    Thanks

    Maxtor

  12. It sounds like loosing the restrictive muffler and increasing boost was a winner.

I have a 84 300ZXT, and a local race shop suggested a device that increases boost to 8-12 psi, and replacing the stock muffler. He says about $300 should take care of it.

  13. I will take it out of the garage sometime today and take some pictures of it and upload them. I doubt that there is another original 84 300ZX that is in as good shape as this one is.

It is difficult to get in and out of the car, because I had one hip replaced, and have the other hip scheduled to be replaced soon.

  14. Way to go...:2thumbs:

BTW you guys are all youngters...:-)

Geeeez... In other websites, I am the OLD MAN (61), here I am at maybe fourth place.....

Does this mean that only Old Geezers drive Datsun Hybrids, or is it that because we are older, we have more money and time to spend on them. The only problem with that is, it is more difficult to get up and down to work on the cars.

  15. Thanks for all the information...I finally found the drivetrain section. Sorry...

I see some good information with the sticky's.

Looks like I paid $166.50 to much, but that is ok. I might just weld the spiders on this one, and use it for drag racing only. It will probably take me a week or two to read all the good posts in this section.

    Thanks again

    Maxtor.

  16. Please help. As I understand it the below is true... If not, please let me know.

    1. 300ZX turbo cars have R200 differentials with posi.

    2. 300ZX differentials do not fit a 1973 240Z.

    3. 1986 200SX turbo cars have 3.90 gears but are not posi.

    4. 200SX turbo differentials will fit the 1973 240Z.

Where can I purchase a posi unit for the 200SX turbo differential?

    Thanks
