  1. And tho it seems that WD-40 would come off pretty easy with acetone. I've also read a lot about it causing problems later when painting, but I guess there are always two sides to every story.
  2. I definitely considering just leaving it like that. Over the summer much of the car had been bare metal and there wasn't too much surface rust that occurred. If I do leave it bare, should I put my homemade car cover (old blankets and comforters) over it, or will that trap in moisture? e
  3. So time has come for me to move out to Colorado for the winter and I'm leaving the Z in my parents garage in Chicago. I didn't get as far as I wanted to this summer, though I did pretty much completely strip the car down to bare metal. There is still a lot of body work to get done on the car, and is not completely ready for primer. Unfortunately I've ran out of time as I'm leaving in two days. So what can be done to properly store the car in the garage this winter? My backup idea is to put a single coat of primer across all the bare metal, but then next summer I'll have to go back to sanding that all off again. (Wouldn't be as hard, but I'd rather not start over again) So any suggestions as quickly as possible would be a HUGE help. Thanks!!
  4. The first pic is without it screwed back down to its normal resting height. Looks fairly level. Still a little off. The second pic is of my putting pressure on it like it was screwed down. This is how it looked before I took it off. At least a 1/2 inch lower than the fender. So, do you think that's normal? I could problem add some sort of padding or a washer or something to keep it at a level height. My hood flaps (that's what i call them) are misshapen as well, i dont think you can tell from the pics.
  5. The pictures are fairly accurate, the cowl panel is much worse. I'll def try to sand/wirewheel whatever rust i can, but its a very awkward area to reach in there. I know there are several rust encapsulators to choose from, but as far as POR15 goes, to they make it in a spray. I think it would be fairly hard reaching all the areas with a brush. Also dangerboy, i may be interested in your cowls, how much you looking for and what are the conditions of them (i think mine might be bent or something cause it's lower that the fenders are and looks really bad)
  6. So I took off the cowl grille or whatever you want to call this thing, and to my surprise i found the underside smothered in rust as well as the area below it. It looks like there was once some sort of weatherstripping to help keep water out, but since this used to be a desert car, all the rubber weatherstripping has cracked away. So my questions to you guys are: Should I just replace the cowl, or try to grind away and treat the rust? And more importantly... What should i do about all the rust below? Again, I'm new to this whole body stuff. I'm fairly sure i can fix the cowl, but i dont know how to deal with the rust below, and how to prevent it from happening again. Thanks, Alex
  7. Are there more than one chip? also is it repairable? its kinda hard to tell from pics.
  8. grrtec would still like to see pics? whats the condition like? also steel or fg? and 1tuffz i am very interested in yours as well, though i would prefer to have one without the chip in it. thanks for the responses guys.
  9. Would like to buy a driver side headlight case. My original steel one got pretty mangled. There is one at MSA but it's a little more than im looking to spend if i don't have to. So if you have an original one, or even a used fiberglass one you no longer need PLEASE let me know. Thanks!
  10. yeah mine were wedged in there pretty tight cause they were full of dirt, but came off pretty easy. the drip rail def wasn't fun for me to get off but its all good now. just a few more things to remove and ill be set

So i've been using aircraft stripper and i really like how well it works although it does create a big mess everywhere. but its shaving off a lot of sanding time which is awesome. after i finish everything i'm gonna be left with really smooth spots where i used the stripper, and a lot of rough swirly patches from the DA sander. Is this gonna be a problem when it comes time to prime/paint the car? i figure i could use a finer grit to kinda polish those spots, buy i dont know if it will make a different after primer and a few layers of paint
  12. I will def be going down to bare metal all over now. I will also try the aircraft stripper to see if I like that option better. And gothalosism, i would love to have someone media blast it but unfortunately the only place that does it over in my neck of the woods charges a little more than i'm willing to pay. thanks for all the responses guys, this has helped me a lot.
  13. Thats what i figured. Is it clipped on, or is there an adhesive holding it in place? Also will it go back on smoothly. I'd really like to not have to replace anything else I've pulled off.
  14. Still new to the world of auto painting and body work, and am still much in the learning process. I have most of my Z sanded now and most of the body trim and acccesories taken off (headlights, decals, mirrors, door handles, ect.) I'm getting ready to put the primer on and i have some questions about certain areas of the car. There is the chrome around the top and bottom of the windows. I've read how the drip rail comes off but have yet to try it, but I have no idea how the bottom chrome trim piece comes off? It is the chrome piece that runs along the bottom of the window on the doors.
