  1. But what happens when an alternator internally shorts is it draws back through the fusible link. I'm guessing no one here has any experience with this happening. A shorted starter will draw a huge amount and drain a battery completely in no time. Its an easy thing to check . . unplug the alternator and check to see if you still have an amperage draw. I just have been very busy with other things and haven't checked it yet. While on the computer I thought I would see what others have run across.
  2. Well what I see first , looking at the schematic, is that the alternator is fed through a fusible link. When I saw the draw there was on my car, that came to mind forst as I earlier explained. So . .still no one has had this problem before? No internal alternator shorts from the Datsun crowd??
  3. well no . . I'm an automotive professional. I run a restoration shop and teach auto tech. So . . I know how to attach cables. I was looking for some serious experience here from someone. I am not familar with the Z like I am with the cars I build. I was turning to the experts here. But please understand I know what I'm doing. Remember the part where the battery got drained while the car was parked . . .
  4. 1982 ZX, non Turbo . . .The car battery went dead . .drained while the car sat for a few weeks. When I went to jump start it, it still had a huge electrical draw. The battery jumper cables became hot immediately and the ACC fusible link burned out in the box right next to the battery. Smoke rolled So I'm looking for an experienced idea as to what may be creating this huge amperage draw in this circuit? Is the alternator in anyway involved in this link? I know an alternator draw/short can be huge and drain down a battery in no time with it off. I run into that on my Fords from time to time. Not sure about the Datsun. I'm looking for a place to start if someone has had a similar experience. Thanks
  5. you will have to check for continutity. See if youhave continuity from the fusible link on the solenoid to the large white wire in the fuse box. If you do, then check from the fuse box to the ignition switch. If all is good, never check from the ignition switch to the positive side of the coil.
  6. OK, so the only ground strap to the body is the piggy back line off the negative cable right?
  7. so is the pic accurate enough such that both cables are black in color as opposed to a red and black?
  8. anyone with ground starp info? where? Type of strap?
  9. I found this pic on this site which does a good job of showing cable location. What it doesn't show is ground strap location though.
  10. what a genius answer and a waste of bandwidth.
  11. where does the negative battery cable connect ?? And where is the engine to chassis ground strap mounted? And lastly, what length cables ( + & - )are considered correct length? I'm looking for stock location points. Thanks
