  1. Ill try it and see what happens, on my distributor cap there's a plug labeled one so I assumed that to be for the #1 spark plug wire. Hopefully this makes a difference, I'll let you know what the result is. Much appreciated! I suspected it to be atleast somewhat out of timing considering i swapped distributors to the later electronic model..How would I go about fixing this? I know I'm getting close to starting her up I can feel il I hope this isn't too much of a headache... Thanks for the reply! -Frank
  2. Hey everyone, I recently installed a zx distributor with the e12-80 ignition module.. After confirming that I have spark I made sure I aligned the rotor to the #1 on the distributor cap. Still when i go to start the car it just keeps cranking but doesn't turn on, although if I spray starting fluid into the carve it almost starts but then stumbles and dies.. what could this be? Ive already checked to see if I'm getting fuel to the carbs ..the fuel pump is definitley working. What would be causing this? Any help is appreciated Im stuck as to what to do right about now :/
  3. Wow... So it turns out courtesyparts.com does have it! Although the name is unspecific (I searched the word "magnet" on the search function) it's there.. for about $20! It's more than I expected, I'm going to do a little more searching to see if I can find a cheaper one but if not I know where to go. Thank you very much for the link! Also would you happen to have a link to the FSM?
  4. Hello, I am currently in the process of installing a 82 280zx distributor with the E12-80 module into my 72 240z, I purchased this distributor at a local pick-a-part for 30 bucks. The thing is I noticed the magnet that is seated beneath the ring that mounts around the reluctor is broken into several pieces.. I'm not sure exactly where to look for it, I also don't know the name for it.. I took the part to a local Autozone to see if they maybe they carried it but they had no clue! Does anyone know where I can purchase this magnet? I took a couple of pictures to help identify it, one of the ring that mounts around the reluctor and another of the underside of the ring which shows the pieces of what used to be the "magnet". Anyone know what this is?
  5. Did you ever find out what your problem was? Mine is doing the exact same thing.
  6. Also I was wondering if it could have something to do with the fuse panel? it does have some of the "holders" melted around...
  7. Thanks for the suggestion, but like I said before the Ballast Resistor was removed by the previous owner, I'm guessing when he installed the MSD ignition system.. I tried reconnecting the wires of this ignition but still nothing, I'm lost at what to do.
  8. Okay guys, I am stuck. Lets rewind about 3 weeks ago.. My Z was running alright, not perfect, but I was able to drive it around my neighborhood with no problems. (not venturing any further due to it being on "Non-Op") Anyhoo I don't remember what my exact intentions were when I started messing with the wiring that leads to the distributor from the MSD ignition module the PO installed.. all I know is that I didn't like the way he had wired it, It looked so "Unprofessional" not that I am a professional myself I simply believed I could do a better job.. but! I see this as a learning experience so here we go. I remember removing the distributor and trying to clean the insides, The PO also had installed a Pertronix ignitor..I'm just really a curious fellow there was no need for me to go in there since the ignition system wasn't giving me any problems whats so ever. Back to what I was saying.. I removed the ignitor and almost everything in the distributor besides the shaft in there. Cleaned everything up and put it back the way it should be. Once I had it back together I went to start the car and I wasn't getting spark. I went crazy all round trying to find the reason for this absence of spark I replaced the coil tried that and nothing. I reopened the distributor and checked to see if I i maybe put something the wrong way but no everything seemed to be in correct order. I try it again and now my starter wasn't working. Two days went by and I made myself believe my starter solenoid wasn't good and I just wanted a new starter because that's just me. So i go to autozone and buy one for $45 plus $15 dollar core charge so it came out to be around $30 so what a deal I though. Anyways I come home, Install it and go try and start it and nothing, It was doing the same thing as when I had the old starter... I didn't know what the problem was.. So when I'm extremely puzzled I sit in my car just thinking and while I was in there i moved the fuse panel since it is hanging about after i pulled my stereo.. now all I did was twist some of the wires around and tried to start it and vooala it tried to start.. well it was cranking but it just wouldn't fully crank over then i started giving it some gas and it came to life! so I thought.. as soon as I let go of the key and it went to the "on" position rpms died and so did the car.. I read online that this could be the results of a bad Ballast Resistor.. Now remember I said the PO installed a MSD ignition system? yeah no ballast resistor to be found... now this is where I am now... I haven't tried to mess around with the car recently because I've been engulfed with school work and wrestling practice. Although I do have some free time on the weekends if I'm lucky so I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone could help me or knew of a solution? I can provide more details of the car if needed. I really want to get this car going so I can start driving it to school. Thanks in advance -Frank
  9. Hello, I came across these fiberglass doors on CL and was wondering if they were worth the price? Here is the link to the doors http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/pts/2530392112.html Thanks guys.
  10. Thanks for all the info guys! Well I'm going by what was mentioned and taking it that the cylinder seals are just old. I'm going with the rebuild kit from Autozone but I was wondering If they were any good? I'm going to go ahead and buy the brake shoes and all necessary hardware and replace it all since I just got some money that was owed to me. The drums don't seem to show any signs of wear.. should I replace them also??
  11. So I recently removed my brake master cylinder to bench bleed it, now that its installed i went to take the car out for a sping and the brakes fail me.. also i noticed the rear brakes are leaking? i removed the drum to see the cylinder is dripping brake fluid.. any ideas as to why?
  12. Someone mentioned downloading the FSM to me before so I'll look into it, it seems like id get to using it a lot. Can those gauges in the video used to check compression on the valves be purchased at a auto parts store? Thanks for the suggestion I'll probably dump it this weekend, should i clean the inside of the tank? If so with what should I use to clean it? Thanks for all the info! Yes I'm planning on keeping it stock for now although I do keep seeing turbo engines with transmissions for sale on Craigslist for around $500 most of the time maybe sometime in the future I'll go turbo, who knows maybe I'll even look into the v8 swap as well! Okay sounds great I'll pm you soon Thanks again for all the info I really appreciate it!
  13. The previous owner said it had been sitting for about a year and a half, the car did not start when i purchased it, what ive done so far is i replaced distributor cap and rotor, replaced the spark plugs and put in about 15 bucks for gas, i bled the clutch pedal but i doubt that has anything to do with it anyways thats what ive done so far how do i do a compression test?
  14. It's a 1972 240z and I think everything's original
  15. Hello I tried searching around the forums to see if someone had the same problem but I never really found anything helpfull.. so I've had me 240z for about 3 days now and I managed to get it started a couple of times and drive it around my block, it seems to drive alright it has power, however if I let go of the gas pedal the car starts to somewhat hesitate as if it wants to die. My first guess was the fuel pump so I checked the fuel lines going to the carbs when I crank the car and there is fuel being fed to the carbs.. I don't know what the problem is if anyone has any ideas? I really want to get this car on the road soon so I wont have to ask for rides to school anymore. Thanks in advance anything is helpful!
  16. Thanks for the advice will do! I actually seen some fluid leaking from the rear tires but im going to replace the brake shoes anyway so ill get to that soon. Thanks again!
  17. Oh lord.. turns out I had the cylinders confused.. I went ahead and bled the slave cylinder under the car and now the clutch pedal feels much better thanks for helping out!
  18. Hmm no I'd rather get the problem solved for good. So your suggesting buying a new cylinder?
  19. Actually now that you mention it, when i went ahead and did the bleeding there wasn't much fluid coming out of the cylinder at all. What would this mean? I was thinking the same thing, I was reading some pages on the internet about "bench bleeding" do you think this would help? Again thanks for replying
  20. Thanks for the reply, If that's the case would I have to replace the clutch? Yeah when the car is off I'm able to shift through the gears fine.
  21. Hello everyone, I bought a 72 240z yesterday and he had someone tow It to my house this morning. It has and L24 with a 4spd tranny, The guy I bought It from told me It ran about about a year ago until his daughter (the owner before I bought It) moved to North Carolina parked It and never turned it on again. So now It's been in my hands for about 7 hours and I've managed to get the car started and got the brakes to work! However when I try and shift gears with the car on its like there's a wall preventing me from putting It In gear. The clutch pedal seems way to loose.. I've tried bleeding It already and nothing It's like the clutch wont disengage or something? I'm not sure the condition of the clutch the guy didn't know too much about the car (what a shame):/ so he basically told me that It was driven about a year ago and that's all he knew. I really want to figure this out because I want to see how this Z drives It's my second Z car the first being a ZX but I'm planning on keeping this one till I'm out of high school maybe even longer so the more info I can get the better! Thanks everyone in advance! Here's some pics of her she needs work but that is just perfect for me these cars have proven to be somewhat "fun" to work on haha (I might regret saying that xD) Thanks again!
  22. hello how did the swap end up? im thinking of doing this to my zx but i need some detailed information. Does anyone know where i can find some?
