  1. Hi Cygnus,

I have been watching this thread hoping that you would find not only the cause but that it was a freak thing.

I've owned my 240 since 1979 and now that I am about to unleash it with 400HP and modified everything, I could not help but wonder if this would happen to me.

You can damn well bet that I'll be going over the engine compartment with a fine tooth comb looking for loose parts!!

Thanks again for bringing this up,

    Tom

  2. Thanks for the advice. I should probably put some heat/sound deadening on the firewall and the tranny tunnel then. What brand and type of deadening would you recommend?

I am going to use a product called Dead Zone Sound Deadening which I bought off Ebay. It's not cheap and it's kind of heavy, but I'm getting too old to ride around in hot, noisy cars! I haven't installed it yet, but it seems like really good stuff.

You can search "dead zone" on Ebay and find the stuff. The seller has 34 sets left as of 10/29.

  3. I scraped all the tar off the floor of my 240Z and removed the firewall padding. I can tell you that it got mighty hot inside the car while I was getting engine dialed in. It was also too loud to be comfortable; sports car or not. I have not driven it on the street yet with the Chevy 350 so that may cool things down a little. I plan on installing heat/sound deadener to keep it reasonable.

My deadening material will weigh about 15 lbs. With 400HP I am not worried about this weight gain.

  4. Brian,

I keep forgetting my camera at work, so please forgive me not posting pics of my rear bar setup. I'll do it this weekend.

Yes, the Suspension Techniques rear bar (PN 51075) is specifically made to be rear mounted and the AZC Billet Diff mount has provisions for this bar. You can see this set up on the Arizona Zcar website.

  5. I just installed a Suspension Techniques rear mount sway bar to the AZC billet rear diff mounts. I am using 300ZX TT CV joints and the fit seems to be okay. The sway bar does not hit the CV joints and boots when the car is sitting on the ground. The sway bard does hit when the suspension is at full droop, but this should not be problem.

I haven't driven the car yet, so stay tuned for more info. I do believe that others on this site have installed the Suspension Techniques rear bar/AZC billet brace combo with success.

  6. BuZy,

I too have the MMS LCAs along with the AZC billet mustache bar and rear diff mount . How is your clearance between the rear mounted sway bar and the axle shafts? I am using 300ZX TT CV joints. At this point I haven't installed a rear sway bar but I am considering the Suspension Techniques rear mounted bar.

  7. Hi Pete,

I thought about the after market bellhousing as soon as I saw the placement of the shift mechanism. At this point I would have to pull engine out of the car and I am so close to getting it running. After 16 years of no Z, my anxiousness is getting the better of me! Since I've already altered the trans tunnel, I think it will be easier and quicker to find a shift boot.

  8. Hi All,

Here are some photos of my Pro 5.0 shifter installed on a Chevy T5 with my 350 + JTR combo in a '72 Z.

It is a tight fit. The tranny has not yet been aligned with the diff (I'm using a Ron Tyler style mount), but it's pretty close. Since taking these photos I have cut away a portion of the tunnel to gain some additional clearance. The shifter is in 1st in these photos. I am 6' 2" and the shifter falls into comfortable positions in each gear.

The stock Z rubber boot really does not work. While it does fit over the Pro 5.0 shift lever, due to the extreme offset of the tranny, it tends to bind the shifter in 1st and 2nd and also pulls the right side of the boot off the tunnel when in 1st and 2nd gear. I will be searching for a shift boot that allows for enough movement while covering the hole in the tunnel. I may start with the '88 Camaro boot to see how it fits over the thinner Pro 5.0 lever.

Hope this helps and I'll post more photos as I move forward. The Pro 5.0 shifter is absolutely awesome so I am determined to make it work!

  9. I like your idea. I am about to install a bias valve and have been pondering a location. Like you I did not want the valve sitting next to my legs or those of the passenger, nor did I like the idea of having to pop the hood to make adjustments. Besides, this set up will make good use of the two holes that are already in the firewall!

    Good work,

    Tom

  10. HICKL,

I went with a Stewart Warner 3 3/8" Maxium Performance tach. I had to remove the clear plastic cover and fab a plastic ring which is glued to the stock bezel and holds the tach in place. I like the 3 3/8" guage because it puts the face of the gauge in the basically the stock position. I think the 5" gauge sits too close for my liking.

PM me if you would like some photos.

  11. Hi Tom,

I just ordered a set of Z31 axles from CV Unlimited. I spoke to a guy named Greg or Gray. He said he was expecting you.

I am hoping Ross has a set of Z31 billet companion flanges that I can trade for my 280ZXTs. Apparently he's been having a supply issue with billet parts.

I am only lowering my Z by about 1.5" so hopefully I will not experience the problems you are having.

How much is your Z lowered?

    Tom

  12. I am installing a setup quite similar to yours using Modern Motorsports adjustable LCAs, AZC billet MB and Brace Kit, R200 CLSD. At this point I am going with 280 ZXT CV halfshafts which I'll bolt up to Ross's billet companion flanges and stub axles (if they ever show up). I may switch over to Z31 CV shafts. I was searching today for Z31 CV half shafts and came across CV Unlimited:

They claim they can design almost any CV configuartion you could ever need.

Good luck and great looking under carriage. Do you have any more photos of your Z?

  13. I got the PRO 5.0 for $199 delivered off Ebay. Bruce at Modern Driveline highly recommends. It's a very stout piece compared to the Hurst model. I do believe it fits both T5 and T56. I am using on a T5.
