  1. By doing a search I found this information, if its wrong someone will jump in.

The 81'zx NA had power steering recirculating ball, the 81'zxt was the first to have power rack and pinion. The unassisted steering boxes were all rack and pinion 79'-83'.

If you have a power steering rack and pinion box, and your car is not a turbo then, it's been converted.

Power rack and pinion was available on all 82'-83' model years.

My 2 83'zxts both have power rack and pinion, my 81'NA has power steering, recirculating ball.

Good new is that you can buy a power steering pump seal kit and both hoses from autozone.

    pump seal kit # 8604 $22.99

    pressure hose #91481 $29.99

    return hose #91482 $27.99

  2. I thought you weren't supposed to do that because the bypass is on the adapter.

Well... Just make sure you use quality filters and do religious oil changes.

I've looped the lines on mine til I installed an oil cooler.

I've seen them new on eBay. I think I may have a extra if you don't mind waiting till later today for me to confirm...

Thanks, I went back to jy with a rag this time to use on the threads, I managed to get it off, only skinning one knuckle..

Someone posted a link to the ebay item on another forum where I had also posted. I checked it out, and honestly would have gone that route, if I'd known what it was called. It is called an "oil filter stud" for 7.95 plus shipping.

Less than the fuel cost to go get the part and the injury, pain cleaning the grease out of a skin wound.. lol

I plan on using the cooler later, I need to get it hot tanked and some new oil lines made, I am saving my money for something I need more right now. Instead of looping it, spending more money...the little odds and ends add up quick,

I'll just run it this way for now, and I will have learned something new.

  3. Hello,

I do no want to use my engine oil cooler. I want to install my oil filter to the block. I have searched and cannot find an answer to my problem.

The threads to the block are M18 X 1.50 the threads to the oil filter are 3/4 X 16.

When you unscrew the sandwich adapter plate from the block you are left with a female M18 X 1.50 opening. This is where I want to install my oil filter. There is no nipple when you unscrew this adapter plate.

Where can I find an M18 X 1.50 to 3/4 X 16 adapter? I think the metric threads on the block will match up to an 02 sensor.

Can I use the adapter plate with modifications?

Here are some pictures of the plate and with the plate apart.

  4. it's been a while, i've not driven the datsun for almost a year now because of a dead alternator. Well I just ordered the alternator from alternatorparts.com. Here is what I ordered:

    I ordered the 200amp alternator D1-CS144-A200 http://www.alternatorparts.com/CS-144_Special_offer.htm

    both serpentine and v-groove pulleys

    Datsun mounting bracket. http://store.alternatorparts.com/partnoa285.aspx

    OEM pigtail.

I did not order the the self exciting regulator as it does not have the provisions for a charge warning light. I have a 280z volt gauge that I will be installing. I plan on removing the factory ammeter from the setup. I have also purchased the equipment to make my own battery cables, so I will be making a custom set. I plan on running 2ga cable between the battery and the alternator, and 1/0 between the battery and starter. I know it's overkill, but I will have stable voltage from idle to redline :)

I can't wait to start driving it again. I drove it around the block this week, and it was running great. I had recently put in a lightweight flywheel, and a 81-83 NA trans, and I want to drive it again!

just wondered, how did this setup work out for you? I have a 83zxt and have problems with misfire on boost. I think the problem may be spark related.

My alternater is near dead and want to replace it. This upgrade, might solve my problem.

  5. disconnected something and didn't reconnect after the work. I'd recheck everything you did. After that just start eliminating problems. Don't neglect rechecking the battery and associated cables. most places load test for free. battery cables with corrosion can cause problems as zx sensitive to voltage.

New battery new cables, with proper grounds.

Trying to check everything out. The only thing I found unusal was the sheilding wire around the dizzy connector to harness connector pulled away from the plug. Was like that when I bought the car, did not cause any problems before.

I believe its something simple that I over looked,

what are the standard test to troubleshoot no spark?

How does the wire to the power transistor [goes to harness in fender well thru firewall] get to the ecu?

    kenny.

  6. Yes, the car was running after the jwt upgrade. [it has to have the 10w-6.8ohm resistor installed, the 81 car had the resistors already]

Problem I believe was a friend who reinstalled the wiring harness snagged the resistor bundle, pulling it thru the firewall, lost 2 wires to resistors.

So all I did was pull the harness and reinstall 6 new resistors. I elimated the plug for the ACC valve, and shortened the wires to the Cobra maf, so it would look better under the hood.

    Thats all I did.

    Checks I performed:

I pulled the dizzy and rotated the shaft and heard the injectors fireing, and the fuel pump cycling on and off as I spun the shaft.

    Question:

Does anyone know how many times per rotation the injectors are suppose to fire? I think the dizzy is working okay.

I turned the ignition on and heard the fuel pump frun or 5 seconds, then turn off, which is normal. I then tried to start the car but I could not tell positively if the fuel pump was running with the ignition in the start position. Somehow I don't think it did.

The fuel pump may not have been running in the start positon of the ignition switch.

I tried to test yellow wire to the igniter by red lead to yellow, black lead to ground, and cranked over the engine.

I probably had the vom on the wrong setting, but it measures, I believe,

.2v. And that reading was pulsing as the motor turned over. It that the test for the gated signal, it was pulsing on the yellow wire to ecu.

I need more information to diagnose the spark issue and what to check.

I pulled the harness today, and untaped the loom, searching for problems. Have found none with the wiring I did.

I hate to reinstall it only to have the same problem.

The harness for the power transistor goes into the fender thru firewall.

How does this harness to the power transistor tie into the ecu?

    thanks a million in advance,

There is a guy who posted today on zcar today that is experiencing the same problems I am having.

here is the link, http://www.zcar.com/forums/read/1/2081796/2081894#msg-2081894 maybe the Zgods on both forums can help 2 people having simular problems at the same time.

    kenny.

  7. jeffp made it. I talked to him once. Sent me pins to use on my JWT ecu for the turbo ecu I sent JWT.

I bought the downpipe and the other pieces of the exhaust on ebay, paid a pretty penny, but if you want the best....

I installed it on my car last week, ran on 4 cylinders, found fault with dropping resistors, reinstalled harness, now got a problem, I have no spark, hope to resolve that issue soon.

sorry for not posting for a long time.

btw, found a shop to fab up the rest of the system, mandrel bend, the over axle portion that I did not get.

    kenny.

  8. hello,

    Kenny here.

I have a 83zxt. I installed the Jim Wolf tech package for the 280zxt.

I had the car running smoothly, but had no power when driving.

I found it was running on 4 cylinders, the other two cylinders not fireing at all.

Found fault with 2 of the 6 dropping resistors supplied with the Jim Wolf package.

I have replaced all of the resistors, not the Jim Wolf supplied, but within specs.

After installing the resistors and reinstalling the harness, I got no spark.

I had a warranty for the power transistor from Advance Auto Parts and picked up a new one today. Installed it still no spark.

The car started right up and was running before I pulled the harness. Now I have no spark.

As I understand it, when you turn the key, the dizzy spins and sends a signal to the EFI relay which in turns sends a signal to the ecu, which in turn sends a gating signal to the power transistor to tell the coil what to do.

My problem is finding out what to check to troubleshoot this problem

I know the problem is minor, because the car was running before I took the wiring harness out to replace the dropping resistors.

I need to back trace from the power transistor to the battery.

thanks in advance for your help,

    kenny.

  9. I also bid on his other item, the new in the box p90 cylinder head. A guy in Australia won the bid, out bid me by $5.00 dollars US.

The shipping of the head to Australia is over 500 dollars. I talked to my new friend and I will probably end up with a new p90 head, I can't see anyone paying that much for shipping??

Possibilities? That auction was just for the cylinder head. No cam, no valves, no springs.... Interesting. What do you think?

BTW, I just bought another 83zxt today for $300.00. Good rust free car. Will use what I need to restore my other 83 zxt and use the stroker crank and cylinder head to drop an awesome motor into my early 260z.

    I can't seem to get enough.....kenny.

  10. How much would be considered a reasonable price for this crank? I bid and the guy who won couldn't pay on time, so it is up to me. I will pick up local, Memphis area. So factor out the shipping charge, thanks kenny.

$335.00 dollars, and the chance to hook up with a fellow Z guy here, in the Memphis area.

  11. You want reliability, and power

Gentlemen OPEN your WALLETS! BEGIN! LOL

That is where I am at now...thanks for the pins for the JWT upgrade.

I bought the fuel rail from Peter. Didn't hear back from you via out last contact, really wanted your fuel rail.

    kenny.

  12. Hello, I have searched and searched and searched again. Is there somplace [or someone] who sells a 3" downpipe and exhaust system for a turbo car? I own a landscape company, and, [do not have the time]!! to source out a place to build a custom exhaust, nor do I posses the skills needed to fabricate one myself....

    What would you suggest?

Need turbo rebuild...want to upgrade, possibly to a hybrid...so where do you find parts?

T-4 modified intake hoses,...where do you go to get what you need?
