  1. So I drove the 78 280z and it died on the freeway when I tried to restart it the battery seemed dead so I recharged the battery and replaced the alternator. Well today I threw in the recharged battery and took it for a spin and the car died on me again just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where to look. Also the two front fusable links are not there could that cause this? Thanks for any help you can give me!

  2. The car cranks but won't start. I replaced the distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, and cables (I get spark.) The air filter is clean. I can hear the fuel pump and when I pull the fuel line and try to start it, fuel squirts (so I know I have fuel going to the engine.) Yet still no start. I've been told it could be the Cold Start Switch, but I think the problem lies with the distributor. When I crank the ignition with the cap off,I can see the rotor spin but it rotates really really slow. (Maybe 1 rotation per 3 seconds). I don't think the rotor is spinning fast enough to turn the engine over. Just my guess.

  3. I don't have the two front fusable links, will that keep me from getting charge to the battery from the alternator? The car is able to start and run and seems to run fine without them. I have not driven any long distances yet so I was just wondering if these are needed or what was going on there thanks!

  4. Spring downward, Right?

I live in Texas, its mostly 75+ degrees year round, still 190?

Is this right? I recently replaced mine cause it was overheating and didn't know which way to put it in I was thinking the previous one was bad and just replaced it the way the other one was. I seem to still have an issue though so if I have it backwards I would like to know thanks!

  5. I was having issues getting my car to fire. What I did was take some wire and jump the fuel pump to make sure fuel was getting to the rails. The next thing was to unplug the connector at the alt which will make the fuel pump constantly run. What I should have done was check the fusable links because one of mine wasn't making full contact and that's why the car wasn't running fixed that and now I can have the plug plugged into the alternator and everything is running great hope this helps.

  6. a little heat really helped it in just a short time thanks! I was wondering can anyone give me some info on the air dam and spoiler? I'm considering selling it as I have come into financial issues but have no idea what it is worth so if some one can tell me the worth, that would be awesome thanks! (this is in no way a for sale add if I do decide to sell these items a for sale add will be created at that time I am only inquiring as to the value of said items thank you!)

  7. Bought the car not running thought it was a bad fuel pump replaced it still nothing found it was a fusable link that wasn't making contact fired right up drove it around for a bit seemed fine took it for a longer drive and died on the freeway. looked to have a bad alt which killed the batt also noticed the temp was kinda high so I decided to get a new alt belt water pump and thermostat. today I replaced all the parts and it doesn't seem to be circulating. I filled up the rad with coolant and started it let it idle for a bit and then it started sounding weird so I shut it off opened the rad and I couldn't see the coolant any more so I topped it of again and fired it back up let it idle for a bit more with the cap off and wasn't seeing movement so then I put the cap back on and let it idle for a bit longer I could feel the rear hose was way hot and the top and bottom hoses were warm by the engine but cold by the rad I'm very frustrated mainly cause I have three cars and none of them work so any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

  8. Starting fluid would give you a hint and some hope. In addition to spark, the ECU has to fire the injectors to supply gas.

There are lots of threads out there about 280Zs that won't start. The 280Z EFI system seems to be "use it or lose it".

The Engine Fuel section in the FSM is an excellent read, full of explanations and test procedures. http://www.xenons30.com/reference.html

Thank you for the link! I was looking and it says the pump should be running all the time when cranking and running but my pump is not. A friend said there was some t juncture at the alternator that you unhook and it will run all the time it could be I'm not getting enough pressure. Any one have any pics of this juncture I need to disconnect? I went out with a flash light but couldn't see any juncture to unhook thanks!

  9. Just picked up a 280z owner said it ran when parked 6 months ago said he had a mechanic friend look at it and said the pump was bad. I threw in a new pump and ran a power wire to it to get fuel to the rails she cranks but won't start and there is spark any ideas thanks!
