I don't think I can afford an om606 and I've read it's a little difficult to find a standard transmission. With the tdi I can use a w55 or w56 toyota trans I think, and they seem to be a bit more available in my area.

I'm not mistaken. You can use that wiring if you want to put a mechanical diesel pump on your 1.9tdi engine, converting into into an old-school, less efficient engine, albeit with more displacement.
At that point you may as well just do a 1.6td engine.
You said 1.9 T-D-I, and if you want modern tdi and modern fuel efficiency, you will have to swap over ALL the electronics that go with the engine. Do your research on what it takes to put a modern tdi into a vw. Many people do whole firewall swaps to accomodate the electric pedal cluster.
Ok,
So I looked into it and you're right. If I want all the electronics to be modern I'd have a lot of work cut out.
On the other hand, I looked up more info on M-TDI injector pumps (hybrid pumps). They can be purchased here for a little over $530 (less if you have a core), or for the DIY folk there is a walk-through here.
I'm going to stick with the mTDI pump because I'm lazy. I'm also going to purchase it because I have a budget that will allow me to do that.
My cost estimates are as follows (various sources, not linked)
AHU/1Z 1.9 TDI engine - 1500-2000
mTDI pump - 530
trans adapter - 600
misc parts - 500
My budget is $4,000
I believe I can recover about $1,500 or more from parts currently in the Z

Only issue I see is electronics, the 1.9tdi is a pain in the ass to swap. You need the cluster, pedals, etc to be wired in.
And, that transmission will suck balls unless you swap in a crazy tall rearend.
I think you're mistaken. This seems to paint a pretty nice picture of the electronics

Thanks for the input.
When it comes to engine reliability, I'm not really worried. My experience with euro engines hasn't been too negative. Maintaining a VW 1.9 may not be as cheap as a SBC 350, but I'm pretty sure it will be fine. There should be some SBC parts in the classifieds soon. PM me if you want something.

Hey guys,
I have a running sbc swap, but I'm not impressed with gas mileage at all. I'm also paranoid that I need a rebuild.
I had a dream the other night and I think I may want to fab up some mounts to fit a VW turbo diesel (1.9 TDI). For a transmission, I've found an adapter that will allow me to use a Toyota truck transmission. This is a kit designed for a Suzuki, but I think if I measure it there shouldnt be much of a clearance issue. I should be able to use my current drive shaft once I've put the right hardware on the transmission side (correct spline). I should be able to use this kit to mate a W55 Toyota trans (80s Celica) to the VW diesel.
Any input would be cool, this is just in the planning phase at the moment.

Hey guys, just throwing a video up. You can find the build stats on my other posts.
Just got around to adding this.

Thanks for the input on the relays. I wonder if anyone here can help with this alternator? In particular, the spade terminal. I know one is signal, the other goes to an indicator light. Anyone know which is which? I've been looking at diagrams online for a while, but can't really determine which spade needs the 12v. This may sound dumb. Sorry!

Maybe its time for a fuel cell with all the goodies?

UPDATE.
Runs and drives!
Brakes need to be bled really bad, and my throttle cable has to be adjusted.
Also, need to wire alternator, and install a coolant overflow tank.
Sorry no pics! First thing in the morning...

How's it going everyone.
I've been converting my 280ZX into a SBC powered street machine for just about two years now. I had to take a rather large break during this time frame to deploy to Iraq, so don't think I was just procrastinating
I'll start by describing the stock L28ET removal. (28DEC07) This was pretty simple, drained fluids, and started removing the harness and labeling things. There's not much that you have to pay attention to. I went the way of a carb'd 350, so I left a bit of the stock wiring harness in tact. In particular, I utilize the stock starter wires, and the (+) going to the stock coil. This will give you the 12v switched line for your MSD units and so forth. Keep all of the alternator wiring together as well. Next is engine removal. Self explanatory, consult your manual.
Everything you need for this swap can be had from http://www.jagsthatrun.com . The engine mounts run around 250 USD, and this includes a trans x-member. Initially I was going to use a 5 speed Tremec, but in the end I found a great deal on a 350/350 setup. I needed to purchase a little extension plate so that the supplied trans x-member would bolt correctly to the TH350. The radiator that is available through JTR is great, and will bolt in just like the stocker. Built-in trans cooler as well! My drive shaft is being built by Santa Maria Driveline in Santa Maria, CA. My measurement was roughly 26 and 1/8 inches. The proper adapter for getting a Chevy drive shaft can also be found at JTR!
Here is a list of all the fun stuff:
- Trick Flow 23 Aluminum Heads
- Edelbrock Performer Intake
- Comp Cam 268xe
- 2200 Stall Converter
- Scorpion Roller Rockers
- MSD 6AL / MSD Dist
- 1.5" Primary 2.5" Collector Sanderson block huggers. Ceramic Coated
- Battery relocated to the rear
- SS brake lines all around
- Hurst full ratchet shifter
The to-do list!
- Wire my alternator correctly. I don't know which wire in the terminal needs to be hot!
- Figure out how this shifter is supposed to bolt in!
- Electric fan (Black Magic most likely)
- Exhaust
- Bleed all my lines
- Cut hood, low profile scoop.
- Throttle linkage. The Lokar kit I purchased was WAY too long
- Arizona Z Car big brake kit
Pictures Coming soon.

Thanks for the suggestion, I think I'll start one this evening.

You have to admit, there is only a fraction of information for an s130 v8 swap compared to the s30. Perhaps a few of us ZX guys should write a sticky and solve this?
-
I'm almost done with my ZX v8 swap. Its not a 2+2, but it shouldn't be much of a difference other than drive shaft length. I used the JTR kit, which allows for a sbc to be bolted to the stock zx xmember. The engine position is adjustable, so I had no fitment issues with the distributor.

The s130 looks sharp in red and black!
-
do you know if yours is a canadian model?
The vin does not pull up in my us version of fast. Check the model plate for
me and let me know if you have a u, v, or n listed there,.
If you don't know what i'm talking about the model plate is located in the engine compartment. The model number will look like the following.
Khls130jfu = t top gl manual 5speed federal emissions.

Bypassed the stock fuel pump, still no results. I pulled the mech pump fuel line, and cranked the engine with my finger over it. Felt no suction at all, mechanical pump may have been broken this whole time.
-
Added my s130 Noted it is now running a v8
-
I don't think the mechanical pump is blown. The fuel doesn't make it that far!
I will bypass the stock pump and post my results.
Thanks!

Sorry about the title, just thought I would make it easier for people searching who may have the same problem.
Here it goes!
I've successfully started the engine. The only problem: it won't stay running, because there is no fuel! The stock ZX fuel pump is still in use. When I turn the ignition, I can hear the pump humming. This was not always so, but that problem was fixed. When it began working, I heard fuel leaking underneath the car. I replaced a fuel line, and the leak stopped.
Now one would expect that the pump would now prime the fuel line, and I would have fuel to my carb! This is not so! I've been working on the car all day, and I'm exhausted.
Anyone want to throw some ideas out there?
And yes, there is gas in the tank
PS/
A mechanical pump is also being used, should I just bypass the pump?

Ok guys, you keep talking about these mercedes turbo diesels so I decided to take a look. I have a lead on an om603 posted about a month ago on craigslist. They want 1000 for it, and I guess its running.
I'm going to consolidate all the TDI info I found and put it into the first post.
If anyone has a particular knowledge of the difficulty of the electronics for these engines (OM603) please speak up! I'm look at you gents who suggested it
It seems the OM603 can in fact be mounted to the same toyo transmission that I was sourcing for the TDI swap
