Sounds like something electronic. Solid sate devices do strange things. Grounding the coil warms up the ignition module and the Pin 1 ECU circuit.
i was thinking along the same lines but already replaced the computer(i have 4 spares for this car)and the 78 ignition module is 375.00 to get another one so the 280 zx distibuter replaces the 78 module so thats all been bypassed , all the signals the computer look good on my labscope but being the 78 is different slightly from thh75-77 z's (and i dont have a manual for the 78 car)

your perception that the dizzy has anything to do with spark strength leads me to wonder about the rest of your post. Had you said coil and ignition module I would lend more credence to your statements. the fact that grounding something makes it work would lead me to believe you have the Lucas, Prince of Darkness disease. Lack of Earthings to use the Limey phrase.
the 280zx dist. will supply a more stable and better controlled signal for your coil and increase coil saturation time,and if you read the post you would have also noticed i cleaned all grounds and added a complete grounding kit for the electrical system,including computer and ignition module

ive got a good one for you 78 280z l28e automatic all stock has been parked for 6 yrs,drained the tank replaced all the filters and replaced plugs wires cap and rotor.started and ran fine i was using it for a daily driver for 3 months until it started this
on cold start up will crank and not start when you check no spark no injector pulse ,i have already upgraded the ignition to a 280zx dissy for a good solid spark.i have checked and cleaned all the computer and ignition module connections,replaced the ignition switch and battery and put a different computer in the car.also installed a engine body computer ground kit
heres the strange part to get it to start you can take a grounded test lite and touch the dist. wiring connector on the left fender you will here the injectors pulse and coil fire then it will run all day long restart every time untill it sets all nite
before you start asking all the newbie questions about fuel fire and spark ,im a ase master tech w/20 yrs on the job and 10 yrs of owning 6 different z's but this one has me stumped
all the people in our local z club have taken a stab at this one and all came up scratching their heads

had the same problem with my 83 turbo car the heater control valve had failed and was sucking water through the entire vaccum system

i own 2 s30 and 3 s130 and my daily driver is a 83 s130 my favorite is my 81 widebody car my s130s spend more time on the road than the s 30 s do

ive got about $12000 in mine and i bought it for $175,the wifes we bought it for $500 and about $9500 later but we would not trade it for anything

just bought a z from dad, it is a mint condition 79 that just got a complete turbo swap. everything was swapped, cruise control power windows locks, power steering. i got it for 2500 bucks with a fresh paint job. im putting a body kit rims and tires on it, redoing the interior with all black and doing the suspension before winter.
this winter im swapping in a turbo 5.3l with a t-56 and hopefully have it done by spring next year.
do the doors have manual windows(hand crank)want to sell those doors i need them for my race car (lighter than the electric window doors)

lol. Right after I asked I found one for sale on eBay that doesn't say Turbo. I think I might bid on it. I don't want to put it on my car but I want to mount it on my wall in my room. Last I looked it was only $15 with shipping.
and what auction # was that? just joking def buy it and save it

Very nice car Bleach. Is that piece on the back between the tail lights something that came stock on these cars or even something that can be bought? I have never seen that before.
it was adealer installed option the ones for the turbo 280zx was pretty common but if you have one that doesnt say turbo thats much more rare

i used the bd kit worked well other than waiting for it to compress a bit so the door would open and close smoothly after a couple of weeks all is good

Oh! I studied the picture a little harder. The wire hold down makes it look like the wire is cut in the middle.

? its brand new just installed 4 days ago when i got the car back from the paint shop
